Ford windstar won't reverse

Worked fine the last time I drove it then it sat for about 2 weeks when I tried to back up nothing no noise no jumping into gear nothing... when I tried to drop it into drive it would drop into gear after a few seconds. Any idea the cause? I have checked fluid levels and they are fine.

Has the automatic transmission fluid and filter been changed. A flush and change is worth a try.

iac valve is sticking remove valve and clean the shaft so it moves freely. This is a very easy fix.

SOURCE: 1995 crown vic gear problems/gear shift wont lock

if the shifter is loose and sloppy feeling then the shift cable bracket has come loose under the dash at the steering wheel. remove the lower panel under the steering wheel so you can see under the dash then get flash light and look while jiggling the shifter. you should be able to see the cable and bracket. if the bracket is loose then tighten the bolts. note this bracket is at the steering colum.

most likely the shift tube bushings are bad- you may have also lost a few screws in the shift tube or they could just be loose. you have to pull the steernig column down to inspect/repair it.

SOURCE: 1999 F250 only goes in reverse, no forward gears.

I believe that reverse is operated by a brake band. So it seems to be stuck. It is operated by a piston, and the seal could have swelled and caused too much friction. But you could loosen up the adjustor so that it is disengaged, in order to get forward gears again. Perhaps you can force the piston to retract as well, once you drop the pan again.

SOURCE: 1998 Windstar Transmission doesn't shift into gear

common problem for ford. and in these vans. Same thing to the 98 I had. I am a mechanic and couldn't figure it out. Thought pin fell out but linkage moved. Brought in to tranny shop and they ended up getting used on for $800

Brake & Wheel issue

Thats quite a list.
The brake noise could be rust on the rotors, but you should check all 4 wheels. The pedal going to the floor is probably a faulty master cylinder.
The clicking noise around the shifter is more or less normal, its the solenoid that locks the shifter in park.
You would probably need to have a tire shop check the rear suspension for that noises.

3 days ago, i went to work no problem, had to move it after 6-7 hrs of time, would not turn on 2 try's, started like normal on 3rd. 2 days ago i drove it locally a couple of times, no problems. today...

I ran into the problem and it was corrosion on the battery terminals. on the inside against the battery. also check the the terminals for good connection.

Our 1998 Ford windstar has went all EXORCIST in dash board etc.

at the minimum, since you mentioned all the idiot lights coming on, your alternator is fried. have someone put in a new alternator. if it's still acting up, have someone go over the computer.

Brakes are very touchy after sitting

I thought the caprice had disk on all wheels?? But it sounds like it's time for the rear brakes to be serviced. If you do have rear drums the pads could be worn and the shoes are slipping and grabing. You can try backing up in a empty parking lot and backing up and giving full brake application. About the 7th application would reset the brakes, if that does not help then the breaks need to be serviced. Good kick
