1998 low mileage Ford Contour, automatic, runs great weeks at atime, then starves for gas, and dies. Usually will restart andrun, but in the last few weeks has repeatedly died, sometimes aftermoving forward only a few feet to a few hundred feet. Last timeit died it wouldn't restart. It's been towed to mechanic twice, runs fine when it gets there. No error code(s). He's nowkept it a total of 5 weeks, recently replaced the idle speed regulatorwhich was surging, and for current problem tried replacing throttlepressure valve. Fuel pressure is fine, even as it's dying.
Tell your mechanic to replace the fuel filter. This part is usually less than $10. It should be replaced aout every 50K miles.
The only other thought I have is the screen around the fuel pump could be clogged up, if the pump is in your tank which I am fairly sure it is. Although most pumps go at least 100K before quitting. Most fuel pumps have a screen around them to catch particles as well and if it gets clogged then it will reduce the amount of fuel to the engine. Does the problem usually happen when the tank is low on fuel? IF so, then you probably have too much debris in your tank. Aside from that I dont have any other suggestion.
sorry!
