1999 toyota solara 4-cyl, it recently started to cut off

I would be driving and I'd come to a stop and it would cut off, as if it ran out of gas. But it would start after a few crank attempts. Today it cut off and did not start right away. I thought it might be fuel pump. But to intermittently stop working? I doubt it! Then I thought maybe it's just the fuel filter clogged. Because just before it cut off the engine idled at a very high speed, seemingly indicating it was burning the last drop of gas. Did that make sense? Can anybody more knowledgable shed some light on this issue for me please? I'd really appreciate it! Thanks! Dyce

It may be anything from a vacuum leak to a throttle positioning sensor, idle speed solenoid. Have it scanned & get the live readings.

SOURCE: 4 cyl Engine starts and idles ok...give it throttle and it dies

I need to get a clear mental picture of what exactly is happening.

With this said, you stated that the car "runs fine" until warmed up.

Q: When you start the car when cold it idles fine?
Q: If you allow the car to idle until "fully" warmed does the car stall?
Q: As the car begins to warm up, Does the RPM fluctuate abnormally?
Q: Does the car Only stall when you press on the gas pedal or does it stall just sitting and idling in addition to pressing the gas pedal?
Q: If you can drive it while cold does the car stall during acceleration when warm or only at Stop Signs / Lights?
Q: If you wait 20min or so, can you start the car again?
Q: How many miles are on the car?

SOURCE: where do I find the fuel filter on my 2001 toyota solara 4 cyl??

The fuel filter on a 2002 Camry is an "In-Tank Filter". This means the filter is in the gas tank and is integrated with the fuel pump. In order to replace the filter, you must remove the tank and disassemble the fuel pump.
Toyota's service schedule, which can be found at ToyotaOwnersOnline.com, does not list the fuel filter replacement through 120K miles (as high a the schedule goes).
Thank you for using Fixya and hope this helps.

Remove camshaft

The safest way to do is by holding the camshaft with a 24mm open wrench and a socket and ratchet on bolt side, this is accomplished by removing valve cover, same if a 4 or 6 cyl. Camshaft has a provision for the wrench, other way is by holding the gear with a chain wrench be careful not to broke or deform that gear.

Toyota solara engine knocking and car cutting off

Meloe77, there's a high possibility you have a mechanical failure inside the engie causing the knocking sound. (Check the oil?)
The reason for shutting off is because the knock sensor can hear it, and the powertrain control module (PCM, herefore) is trying to detune the engine to eliminate the sound, (as if it were caused by bad gasoline.) The fact that there is a mechanical knocking sound, means that the sound cannot be eliminated by detuning of fuel or spark mapping, therefore it starves for fuel and/or spark causing the engine to stop running.
My recommendation: Have the vehicle TOWED to a reputable mechanic and ask him if its possible that I'm right.

Cutting off

Hard to diagnose long distance. I would look at the throttle body and the idle air control for dirt-sludge. The control valve may be stopped up or sticking.
