on many cars there is a switch which turns off the overdrive; if you have one maybe you hit it accidentally. the other reason for this indicator is if the transmission has overheated; the computer doesn't allow overdrive until the trans. cools down
Check the bracket where your throttle cable is connected to the engine. There should be 2 cables. One of them is the throttle cable, the other is what I call the "kickdown cable" which tells your shift computer when you punch it and tells it to down shift. It can also affect the shifting ability. It is possible that cable has come off or so loose its not functioning properly. Of course it is also possible that your bands are ate up and you no longer have overdrive anymore. Try manually shifting from drive to overdrive see if that helps.
check airflow sensor just borrow one and testand or try kickdown adj,or throttle possition sensor,check for air leaks by spraying airosole flammable near intake manifold,if it revs higher theres a leak
