Car starts y Up just fine there is somewhat of a knocking noise but then when I put it in gear and push on the gas peddle its revving buggy it's not going anywhere. on a little hill it would roll back if I tried to pit in drive.like on I'm neutral.we noticed that it would make a heavier knocking sound when the meter read 40 rpm
I think ( if it is a manual gearbox) your clutch has gone OR ( if it is an automatic ) the connecting plate between flywheel and gearbox is broken...

Very common on this make and model trans, pump drive splines inside torque converter strip out and pump is not turning, Most times there is no damage to pump shaft. Remove trans and remove torque converter, inspect the splines at the very bottom of the hub hole. If stripped out inspected pump shaft splines which are the smaller center splines coming out of trans, if ok replace torque converter and re-install trans, change out fluid, clean any metal from magnet and replace filter, fill with fluid and verify proper operation.

This is a very common way that a torque converter fails.
The transmission will need to be removed and a new torque converter installed.
