SOURCE: 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee - will not start - starter

I also have a 98 Jeep Cherokee with the same problem. I know I probably need to replace the starter eventually but as of now I turn it to accessory only, pop it in neutral, then start it and it works every time when it wouldn't even try to turn over with it in park. Don't know why it works, but it does. Give it a try.

SOURCE: My car wouldn't start today

Your onboard security system probably has the fuel system disabled. This is common when the battery gets disconnected. The imobilizer unit will sometimes set a code if the battery gets disconnected then hooked back up. clearing the fault codes will usually get the engine to start again.

SOURCE: Battery tests at 12 volts but won't start but starts with jumper cables to other car

Check the voltage when cranking the engine, if it drops below 10 or 11 volts the battery probably needs replacing. Also check the voltage when it is running, it should be 14 volts or more. If it is not then the alternator is not charging.

SOURCE: 06 pontiac grand prix wont start no clicking when you turn the key over even jump starting the battery, has dash lights & radio & parking lights. battery tested good. put a used starter & altinator on

Used parts such as starters and altinators don't last. It might **** but it sounds like you need to buy a new starter, altinator, and battery. Or just start with buying one at a time.

What can it be? my jeep won't start, it does not crank and the battery is good.

wow one of the first posts ever to say, it wont crank....
very clear that. Its silent.
but is it automatic transmission, ill guess yes.
  1. fuses good.??
  2. battery terminals not green with rust.?
  3. does it crank in Neutral, as the operators manual states??
  4. you do know that new batteries, can be DISCHARGED right?
  5. so does jumper cable jump starts to a running donor car crank now? AAA Tow style? (oops new battery was discharged , charge it now)
  6. no, then hot wire the starter solenoid ,with keys in pocket.
  7. cranks now? , then starter is good. (i just saved you cash)
  8. no it doesn't crank now, the starter is bad, or engine is seized. (hand turn engine to discover that fact)
  9. cranks hot wired? yes,. that means the key line is dead.
  10. the Key line can be dead for 3+ reasons, aftermarket alarms added or remote start bs added, or transmission park/neutral switch is bad or ignition switch bad.
  11. to find #10 it takes a $10 volt meter, are you game?

2009 Jeep Compass won't crank. Any answers ?

sure,
but what transmission, ill guess automatic.
Check fuses first? always first !
Check engine light on,key on, no, fuses.....

does it crank in NEUTRAL? (it will (can), per opr. guide)
does it?
scan it yet to see if there are TRS switch errors>??
do jumper cable jumps work>? off a running car, AAA tow truck like?
yes, then the battery was dead, or discharged.
no? then key line is dead. if hot wiring starter fails.
if hot wiring passes , then the key line is dead. TRS switch.

got tools or just want wild guessing?
my guess is wild.
so jumper cable it and report.

2009 Jeep Compass won't crank. Any answers to why this might be ?

It's a relay part #68053218AA $23.85 look at it and you'll see on contact is missing. You'll have to get it out the socket that the relay is plug into.

Will not start

is this this s DIY question or ? just a request for wild guessing.
Ill assume its a real DIY. ? do tell.
what is a jumper box to house. ?????????????????
first off, you need to say,
it cranks robustly but does not start or not.
does it crank? if yes, why buy a starter?
no car starts unless cranked. (mine push starts and gravity starts)
but I bet yours is a A/T tranny , automatic.?
so does it crank.?
?
lets pretend, it cranks perfectly.
and really is a no start (confusing your replacing a starter )
this jeep , like most from 1993 have the ASD relay.
THE ASD relay must close to start the engine.
The ASD relay must close, and if spark , and up to 7 other things
are good, then it will stay closed, if not it drops out. KILLING starts.
that is what it does, so watch the ASD while cranking, what does it do>???????????

http://www.fixkick.com/Jeeps/ASD.html

now I will do NO CRANK.
and the funny house box thing, (a battery charger? or what i cant guess)
no cranks are caused.
By bad shifter, switch.
this is called the key line.
so i hot wire the starter solenoid, (remove tiny wire first to it)
ask how to do this.... its not hard. (mostly but some cars have shields making it harder today)
and it dont crank ! NOW? , then bad battery, starter bad, cables or seized engine. (turn engine by hand ,ok? to spin? by hand?)
and it does crank. then bad key line is reason.
easy huh? just one hot wire step and bam, problem cut in half.
i then try to crank in neutral, bam it cranks. and starts.
bad PRNLD switch.
or i just wiggle the shifter, bam, it cranks
or i wiggle the key switch funny in crank position and bam it cranks
bad key switch.

last, pretend the starter fails the hot wire above.
i hit it with a hammer, bam it cranks now.

we can do all that with a voltmeter easy,
ask.

http://www.fixkick.com/nocrank.html

see hot to solve no cranks on most cars.

other simular failures.
battery dies after parked.?
charge light (dash) on , driving? or idling, bingo, dead battery.

one more , car cranks but will not start for longer than 2 seconds
ASD action
but you failed to notice the Immobilizer lamp glowing wrongly.

my last answer. the funny house thing is a battery charger
and if you leave it charging long enough car cranks.
bingo?.?????
if yes, then the battery is DEAD and is DISCHARGED.
it discharged because you or something is left running, in car.
see phantom drains here.
the reason the car jump failed is you didnt give it enough time.
a very bad car battery can swamp the donor cars power source.
(and easy with cheap jumper cables.)
here is what you did wrong.

car is rested, it wont crank
you open the hood.
and check the batteryvoltage with a volt meter.
it reads 12.6vdc rested. good, it should crank ok, (but my not)
or it reads 12v, its discharged, so charge it to 12.6v and try again.

http://www.fixkick.com/drain/drain.html

  1. won't crank?
  2. battery discharges overnight.?
  3. won't start but cranks ok.?
  4. charge light stuck on.? running.?

which?

Car won't Crank/start

With a voltage meter see how many volts are at the starter terminal. If not 12+ volts you have a bad connection. Check connection at the starter solenoid. Does it have 12+volts? Short the solenoid. Does it put voltage to the starter?

2009 corolla hooked up jumper cable backwards, car won't start

TAKE OF BOTH CABLES AND GROUND THEM TOGETHER FOR 30 OR SO MINUTES, THIS WILL RESET THE CARS MEMORY, TEST VOLTAGE ON BATTERY WITH VOLT METER & IF IT IS BELOW 12.31V THEN CHARGE THE BATTERY , ONCE BATTERY CHARGED HOOK UP BATTERY LEADS (TO RIGHT TERMINALS) & ATTEMPT TO START CAR, IF ALL YOU GET IS A CLICK THEN LOCATE THE STARTER MOTOR & GIVE IT A FIRM WHACK WITH A HAMMER (SERIOUSLY) THIS WILL FREE UP THE STARTER & WILL ALLOW THE CAR TO CRANK

I have a 1999 jeep gc laredo and it wont start replaced the starter and battery but it just click. i also checked all fuses and relays but nothing worked it just clicks

Take a pair of jumper cables, and use the ground side of the jumper cables, and clamp on the negative battery post, and the other end of the negative ground of the jumper cables,to the engine, anywhere that is a good ground, then try and start it,if it starts, then the ground cable on the jeep,is bad, replace it,you might check the connections on the battery post, clean the grey,or black color residue off the battery post, and inside the cable ends to where they shine. This residue acts as a insulator, and will not allow contact. The new battery can have this residue on it,even if it is new.

2008 Jeep Compass won't start. Lights are bright and radio works; battery jump didn't help. Remote key fob worked last night, but doesn't work this morning.

I had same prob with Grand Cherokee - no rhyme nor reason as to when, where or why it wouldn't start. After two new starters the shop finally found a starter wire/cable that was corroded on the inside. Mech' could move it back and forth and it would / would not start. Changed cable six months ago - no problems since. Hope it helps.

Jeep won't start

Sounds like you have a bad battery. The quick way to diagnose it is to first ground the negative jumper cable to a metal point that is attached to the car frame of the Jeep. If you can't find one just attach it to the negative battery terminal on the battery.

Then detach the postive battery cable from the battery (you can do this first if you feel safer). Next is to hook up the jumper cables to the car that is going to jump your jeep. Make sure the positive jumper cable is not touching anything on your Jeep first.

If you have friends this makes it easier!

Now you want to connect the positive jumper cable(red) to the positve battery cable on the Jeep. Make sure that the cable ends are not touching the Jeep at all (very important)

Now you want to go start the jump vehicle and make sure the cable still is not touching. Then go try to start the Jeep. If the battery was bad the Jeep should fire up with minimal effort. If you are still getting the same issues then it is either a bad cable or possibly a starter motor that is starting to go (high resistance).

If it starts bring the battery down an autoparts store to be tested.
