Check Engine light

I have a code P0171. Any suggestions on how to fix this? I have a 96 Ford Explorer XLT V8. Rough idle, no loss of power while accelerating, slight hesitation while driving but no drag to accelerate and if the gas is floored I get black smoke and soot from the tail pipe.

This is a lean Code. What is happening is too much air is entering the engine and the O2 sensor is making the engine run rich to rebalance the fuel ratio.

You need to find the leak. Use a spray bottle of water while the engine is running. When you spray over the leak, the rpm will change or the engine may even stall. This is where repair is needed.

Testimonial: "When I spray the water, Am I spraying along all hoses from the top of my engine or somewhere below? I'm not too sure where to start/look. All the hoses look the same to me lol."

These would be the lines going to electric switches and along the seams of the intake manifold. Best to look up subjects of "Intake manifold gasket" and "vacuum hoses" for your year and model vehicle. Just google it.

SOURCE: 98 explorer sputtering and white smoke from tail

Hi Dre,

I hope you don't shoot the messenger, It sound like a blown head gasket.

The white smoke is water in with the combustion.
The rough running is either no compression or coolant in with the fuel/air mix.

Things to check to confirm.

  • When cool, take off radiator cap. is fluid low? Get everyt one clear and start the engine. Does coolant erupt out of the radiator?
  • Run a compression check on all cylinders
  • While the plugs are out, inspect cylinders (flashlight) for water.
  • Check oil for a milky color
The little bit of good news is it still runs. So secondary damage hasn't occurred yet. You need to get this addressed quickly.

I'm sorry to be the bearer of this type of news.

2003 Ford Explorer XLT Wants To Stall At Low Idle,, especially when at a stop light

How does it idle in park , does it run ruff or smooth? Are any lights lit on the dash , check engine etc. ? Could have a partially plugged IAC air passage .idle air control (IAC) valve ! The engine computer uses the IAC to control idle , when under a load such as when put into gear the computer raises the idle ! It does this by allowing more air to by pass the closed throttle into the engine raising the idle ! If these air passages clog they restrict the air flow an cause a idle problem ! Now if it runs ruff at idle in park you could have vacuum leak ! Rough Idle How to Fix Ford Taurus Engine Stalls at Stop Signs

1998 Ford E-250. Rough idle/hesitating at idle. Drives fine. Check engine light on. Shows

Hi, since the check engine light (CEL) is on you need to get the trouble codes read. Most auto parts stores will do this for free. If there isn't one nearby, any shop should be able to read it (for a charge) or you could buy your own code reader.

The code(s) you'll get will be in the format PXXXX like P0171 or similar. Once you have the codes you can look them up here to get a description - http://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/

Or post the codes back here and we'll help you out. The next step is to get those codes though so you know exactly which areas of the engine to concentrate your diagnosis efforts on. Good luck!
