Engine revs like it shifted into neutral speedometer drops to zero and bounces between zero and fourty and Tac osscilates, This goes on for about 20 seconds then everything operates normal. Engine light eventially resets itself and works fine for a couple of days then engine light comes on and above mentioned problems repeat, Checked engine light code while it was on and got P500 ( Speed Sensor Malfunction ) this is a 2002 Toyota Camery 4 cylinder with 95,000 Miles, should I just change the speed sensor since the problem is too intermittent to nail down.
Yes for sure if it say that is where in malfuction is it is allways best to try that first.
the sensor is only about 35 dollars
I'm having the same problem with my 2002 Camry but i've been driving on this condition for a couple months. What long term damage can this cause? Also, Good year is trying to charge me about 500 dollars to get this problem fixed. Is that a normal price for this repair?
It is possible for the Speedometer and Tac gauge not to work but will not affect the way the transmission works. If the problem is in the interment cluster the transmission can still receive the input from the speed sensor. Does the check engine light come on? If the transmission isn't receiving the signal the check engine light will come on and set code. If the check engine light isn't coming on or doesn't set code for speed sensor signal you problem is more likely to be in the interment cluster. The RPM would be the same.
