Hi there, I have a Totota Tercel 1998 automatic. I just had a problem with the alternator a few months ago and it as been changed with a used one (but good condition). Now, I have some problems when I want to start it. When I turn the key I hear some noise like it want to start... And it take a few times (2 or less) to start. I was wondering what was the problem...
- For starting problem check the following:
- Battery (perform battery test with battery tester).
- Check battery terminals for any corrosion and sulfate deposits.
- Battery to starter motor cable.
- Battery to engine ground and chassis cable.
- Starter relay and solenoid.
- Starter motor.
- Ignition switch.
- Wiring and connectors.
- Alternator.

no that is not normal whoever cut the key for the car did not do a very good job if i were you i would get one remade because in the long run you are going to end up messing up the ignition switch and they are not cheap

Triple check your battery cables on the battery end .. esp the positive + side.. Side post batteries are notorius for that

Check the hall sensor. Check the ignition wire going attached to the solenoid, make sure it is not bare or broken. A worn solenoid can also cause this. Check the starter relay as well.
