Hi Ed.
this is all i could find at the moment.
Gas Cap Causing Gasoline Smell in Car. I know it may seem obvious, but a loose or missing gas cap can cause a fuel smell in your vehicle. You could even have a faulty gas cap that is leaking fumes. A faulty gas cap can also cause the check engine light to illuminate with a DTC on newer cars.
How long has the vehicle been sitting since the engine was last running? Secondly, how much fuel is in the fuel tank, and how long has that fuel been in the tank? Gas goes bad over time. If you take the fuel cap off and smell the odor coming from the tank, does it smell just like the gas in your 4-cycle engine lawnmower, or does it smell "different?"
I am guessing that you have the valve timing set so there is low to no compression. Remove the plugs and check compression. You need min 100 lbs to have the engine run properly. Or if you have a vacuum guage hook it to direct manifold vacuum. With the engine cranking around you should have 1-3 in of vacuum or it will not start. It will smell like gas because the gas keeps enternig the cylinder but not being burnt. then it contaminates the oil.
Do not start or use Vehicle. If in Garage, do not use the garage door opener. Manually open the door to Garage. Call tow truck with a flatbed. Have vehicle towed to open location.
There were some vehicles with Recalled gas tank straps. But anything could be wrong. The fix may be reasonable.
Call a Dealer with your Vin# to see if yours is an affected Recall.
i had the same issue and it was actually my gas cap. For some reason if the gas cap wasn't sealed all the way, i would get a strong gas smell inside the vehicle. try that 1st
my question is do you smell gas when outside the vehicle? chances are it is pulling "fresh air" from outside the vehicle and might be pulling vapors due to thew fact you have a gas leak under the hood. check your engine while running and if a gas leak is seen. turn it off imediately and repair it. do not drive it until then. happy holidays
NO NO NO.....GO TAKE YOUR VEHICLE TO A SMOG STATION AND ASK THEM TO TEST THE GAS CAP FOR YOU. VISUALLY LOOKING AT A GAS CAP WILL NOT TELL YOU GOOD OR BAD. THEY CHARGE 10.00 AND WILL TELL YOU IF THE GAS CAP IS LEAKING. DONE IT TOO MANY TIME WITH DAIMLER CHRYSLER.
