Our 93 cavalier with a 3.1 has lost oil pressure and there is a ticking in the engine. My wife told me the pressure guage had been dropping to 0 but would jump back up where it was supposed to be fair

The car does start and drive but it feels very sluggish as though there is no compression. I am hoping this can be solved with just a oil pump but would like the input of the community with hopes there is someone out there who may be experienced in this type of issue and either confirm my suspicions or offer me some advice as to where I need to go from here. This is our only transportation right now so it has to be fixed pretty quickly.

Highly doubtful that a pump will fix a 0 oil pressure problem. This sounds more like worn bearings. Have a shop do a pressurized oil leakdown test before replacing the oil pump. If the bearings pass the test, then try a pump.

SOURCE: Fluctuating oil pressure gauge.

Two quarts is about half the capacity. The pump was probably starved of lubrication and is failing.

If that's not expensive enough, you may now have a problem with a damaged engine. You may want to just put that money into a new vehicle.

I don't think the car would have enough power in its present condition to get high enough to reach a cliff, and driving it into a lake would not be environmentally sound. Besides, the fine would not be worth it.

The cheapest and easiest maintainance that anyone can do on a car to avoid expensive repairs is still checking the oil ever 1000 miles (filling if necessary!) and changing it every 3000.

In some cases where the oil is not changed properly, the oil pump screen maybe plugging or your oil filter is defective. Fram is a good filter. If there is no problem found, replace the pressure sensor.

SOURCE: 1996 chevy corsica,2.2 oil pressure DROP when hot????

dont run it anymore!!!
check oil is reaching the rockers & that there are no blocked feeed holes !
the pump may have been fitted too loose or the gaket is not sealing creating a pressure drop!
it may have some of the old bearing material enter the gallery,s & or the pump!
good luck Cheers Rob

first things first, change the oil & filter & run the car to see if the tic & noise stops . i see this alot people just forget or like you have issues that take thier mind of off the normal maintenance off the vehicle. the oil change should help and you have to drain the oil to see if there is any metal in it!! give that a try & dont use any additives until you have changed it . wayne

2000 GMC Savanna, oil pressure guage drops to

You need to pull the pressure sensor and install a manual test gage, (borrow from Autozone or other chain part store) that is the only way to verify the engine is not loosing oil pressure.

oil pump gears inside the lower engine, or electrical. 1st make sure its full on oil, then sheck it with another pressure guage to confirm its not actuall pressure.

Oil guage drops to near 0 and the check guages light comes on when I am at idle or on a slope at idle. Is this a concern, or dont worry about it

It means that your engine is loosing oil pressure, it is a concern to be worried about. Check your engine oil level, the engine might need oil.

1989 F150 351 oil pressure guage starting dropping to 0 suddenly and engine light comes one. When I rev the engine it goes back to normal but a soon as the rpms drop the needle goes all the way to the left...

Hi:
Usually your oil light doesnt come on unless you have less than 10 lbs of oil pressure. You either have a bad oil pressure sending unit, or your engines oil pump is bad. The only way to verify your engines oil pressure is to buy a direct reading pressure guage and install it on your truck, or have a mechanic check your engine oil pressure. Eitherway, you need to do something soon, because the long term effects of running with low oil pressure will ruin your truck engine.

Difference between oil sending unit and the oil pressure switch

Same part...make sure you get one for gauge, not idiot light though. If the engine has any knocking or ticking when pressure drops do not drive it and have a mechanical gauge installed to check actual pressure. Parts often have different names for same item...your driveshaft is actually called a propeller shaft!!!

The oil pressure gauge keeps dropping down to 0 while i am driving

If you don't hear any ticking or knocking while the pressure gauge drops, the problem is probably a failing "oil pressure sensor". If you do hear a ticking or knocking, the problem is probably a failing "oil pump".
