Intermittent car shuts off

170K miles on the car. Intermittently the car will simply shut off. Sometimes when driving and sometimes when idling in park. Sometimes when I start it, it acts like it is only running on a few cylinders and will die if I take my foot off the accelerator. Normally the car performs great with no problems at all. But when it starts to do this problem, it will persist for approximately 50 to 75 miles of operation, then all of a sudden it will be fine again. Also failed inspection this year for poor air flow through the engine and unburned fuel in the exaust. Air filter is new.

I had this problem once with a Jeep Wagoneer Limited. The combustion principle is most simple. You have fuel and you have spark. Since you are getting emission failures because of unburned fuel, I would start with the spark.

Most modern cars don't use points anylonger, but an electronic computer circuit to generate the spark. These can be very temperature sensitive. In my case, whenever the car would get warm, it quite and left me stranded, 20 minutes later, it would cool enough and run again as if nothing had happened.

I would try locating the spark amplifier under the hood and get a replacement. This is likely to solve the problem.

Hope this has helped.

Regards,

Doug

My 1977 Pontiac grand prix won't start after driving it across town. After it sits for a while then it will start. Was told this is a fuel filter problem?

Yes it could be a fuel filter problem but it could be some other things also. Do you notice a pattern with this? Do you drive the same amount of miles and it shuts off each time? Does the temperature outside have any pattern? Is the first time it happened? You could have a fuel pump going bad. Or your alternator could be intermittently operating which means sometimes your battery gets charged and sometimes it runs down.

When driving on the roadway, the car will just quit. The automatic doorlocks will click and the engine will shut down. I pull over put it in park, then start it again and go. This happens intermittently...

2000-2002 Grand ams are notorious for having the most faulty passlock systems ever installed. You are experiencing a passlock failure. When the cars stalls on you, check to see if the "security" light illuminates on the dash board some where. That would be a 100% indicator that its the passlock

Look at this link i found when i had my problems. Read up on symptoms and fixes. 1 of those fixes eliminates all parts of that passlock system and you will never have to worry about it again.

Cruise control schematic diagram

I have a 1998 GMC Safari van in which the cruise control has quit. It didn't go all at once. It would work intermittently. Sometimes going 5 miles or so and then shutting off and then after another few miles, it would set again. This sounds to me like something getting hot. Is there a circuit breaker for the cruise control...or?
I can't seem to find a good schematic/diagram for the unit. Driving me nuts! I don't want to have to buy a whole new module if there is a simple fix.

Anyone?

2001 dodge ram shuts off intermittently, restart ok no mil.

You are experiencing what is called a CCD Bus short in the instrument cluster circuit board. (chrysler calls it the "chrysler collision detection buss) it is how all of the controllers and modules communicate on that vehicle. Get a new one and you should have no problems, and used ones are a HUGE gamble. Other vehicles that are extremely bad for this are, caravans, neons, sebring coupe/conv, strates, and cirrus. It will also cause a no start condition that is EXTREMELY hard to catch.
