Whenever I accelerate out of the lower gears, I hear a whining, buzzing sound coming from the engine right behind the center dash. It sounds like an old cd player loading/ejecting a disk, and it stops right after. Dealership says that is a normal engine noise. They stuck it in neutral, revved the engine, and got it to do it on demand. Well, that is not normal. Do you agree?

The sound you hear, is it a whining, popping, grinding, scraping or rattling sound?
If you drive a manual transmission vehicle and notice a grinding noise, it can indicate the clutch gear is no longer disengaging correctly.

Hi, need more information. What are you doing when it whines, i.e. does it whin at rest with the engine running, is it whining in certain gears only. Does the whine appear to be coming from the engine bay or elsewhere.Does sound like it is coming from one of the wheels. Does whine increase as you accelerate. please supply more detail.
Also, is it diesel or petrol? Please add more detail and resubmit
Ok i have a couple questions for you. Is your a/c or fan on? Is the sound consistent with your rpms(higher pitch with higher rpms and lower pitch for lower rpms)?
could be a water pump bearing ---idler puller pulley bearing---power steering pump bearing or gears --alternator bearings. Get a mechanic stethiscope from a auto spare shop and carefully place the tip on the housing of the units. If you hear a steady buzz then the bearing will be ok but if you hear a low grumble then that unit's bearings are on the way out.
i recommend that you take it into auto-zone or a car shop asap. from what you have described the ticking as, it sounds like a bottom knock. as for the whine i don't know.
Re:- the buzzing behind the dash:- Its tiny a fan which carries on running in humid conditions to circulate the air so you dont get blasted by warm air when you use your climate control. It circulates air across the humidity sensor. It keeps running for a while after you switch off, and starts again when you open a door. It does this so that there is less delay in getting the climate control to the right setting when you switch on (or restart).
