With a rattle under the hood
OK, the correct interval for the replacement of the timing belt for this model is every 60,000 miles. if the belt hasn't been changed, i would do so asap. it may be to late considering that it has started to rattle.
The timing belt can become damaged before it actually breaks, in return, causing valve timing to shift. this will cause the valves to tap the pistons during the idle.
This will run you about 1100 dollars at the dealership plus, they will also replace any push rods if need.

just bought it about it 3 months ago, but i did have a 96 before that and thats what happened to it. same kind of rattle under hood. think that's probably the problem? this one is still running though. how much do you think that fix would cost me while it is still running?
it is a 2.0,16 valve ...... GS, i think regular, not sure, female here, and don't know jack,
not 100% sure, but i think it is in front of the engine

Ok, one more question. Where is the location of the rattle?
Is it under the valve covers or , is it in front of the engine?
which engine are you running, turbo or regular?
When was the timing chain/belt changed?
Was it recently or, do you know?
