I have a similiar problem with my standard 97 Sunfire, but i tried the solution and i dont have cables, as i have a hydrolic clutch, and all thats there are 2 pumps connected to the shifter. it seems like the shifter is out of place and can not be pulled down far enough to reach 3rd,4th,or R. is it a problem with my shifter or my transmission?

okay so i fixed the problem myself, this is how to do it. take out the consol shifter bot shift knob. take off the connecting sockets to the shifter. pull up the carpet and follow the cable it goes through the fire wall on the passenger side both cables go through another boot there. take a flat screw driver and pry off the boot. feed the cables underneithe the plastic peice that go through under the dash. open the hood and take off the sockets connecting the cables to the transmission. they are in a bracket a little further down the line pull them out of that then you should be able to take the cable right out. assemble in reverse order

this is normally located under the hood next to the hood release lever if it is missing from yours then try www.autozone.com or go to your local Pontiac dealership in the parts department or an auto parts store like Napa or Autozone

sounds like a starter solenoid went bad which it is easier to replace the whole starter assembly then just the solenoid and you can get one with a LLT Limited Life Time warranty.
