    Transmission - sorry.

Sounds very easy. So why to the Trans. shops charge so much to do this? I thought maybe it was one of those jobs that the parts are fairly inexpensive but the catch is that it take 3 days to get to what you need to access to do the job! (If you know what I mean)

what fluid the oil or trans?

  • Anonymous Mar 12, 2014

My 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee just started jerking all of a sudden. It does not do it all the time, but I am concerned. I have gotten an oil change, transmission fluid is good, did a water treatment, and I did a gas treatment. It does not need a tuneup, so what may be the cause of the jerking?

I'm going to guess since you didn't mention which fluid...Transmission?
First find out which unit you have (usually an id tag on it somewhere ) Then look up what kind and how much fluid in your owners manual (usually around four quarts...unit holds more but you can't remove it from the pan) Remove all pan bolts and lower pan. (some units have a drain plug, use it first if you have one ) you will see the filter attached to the valve body. remove it and install the new one, Make sure all gasket material is removed from pan and trans. Clean any metal etc from pan and internal magnet (there is always some in there but should not be a ton of it) Then put pan and gasket back. Make sure you can turn each fastener easily to make sure they are not cross threaded and only tighten them after they are all in there. Bolts do not have to be tightened down like they never should be removed again (snug then a little bit more)tighten in an X pattern not a circle.Replace about half of the fluid with car off, then put in remainder while running. Put your foot on the brake and shift to reverse then drive a few times then check fluid level.Low is bad, a tiny bit (less than half inch) over is OK.
Drive for a short ride, check again for leaks and re-tighten if any are found.
If trans was exceptionally dirty and yours has a drain plug, I recommend that you use a generic oil on the first change, then in a week, drain oil again and re-fill with good brand name stuff. and perhaps a bottle of lucas conditioner.
Good luck!

Reason it's expensive is that people will willingly pay to have it done, and are afraid to do it. Profit and market demand are the driving force behind everything you see hear and touch. If everyone did their own work, the price would come down. (like that would ever happen)

I have a 2004 jeep grand Cherokee, I have 1st gear manually from a complete stop, same with 2nd. But when I put it in drive, the engine revs at 3500 rpm, but I only travel 5-7 mph. Tcm trouble code p0700...

sounds like low transmission fluid, a dirty filter or both, to check the fluid level, open the hood leave the engine running put the transmission in neutral with the parking break on then pull out the dip-stick labled trans, wipe it off with a rag plug it back in then pull it our and look at the level. To see if there is a dirty filter look at the fluid if it is darkbrown or black and it smells burnt then you need to get your transmission flushed and the filter changed.

I am starting to feel lag in the transmission slipping. I want to do all the necessary maintainance. My question is where do I start? Tranny fluid? Replacing fluid in any of the trasfers? Or axel?? Any...

Change trans fluid and filter should cure your problem. Later after you get that straightened out you might consider changing diffs and transfer case fluids to synthetic to help get mileage up.

Need to check the transmission fluid pressure sensor in the tranny. Can it be repaired or does it need to be replaced? The tranny will delay going into R or D when cold. It also sticks in gear "4" when...

sounds like a fluid flow problem. probably need to change the fluid and filter in the transmission. If the sensor is bad it will have to be replaced. Hopefully it is that simple. If its sticking in gear and delaying when its cold I would prepare yourself for a transmission rebuild. It could be a pre-cursor to a bigger problem.

What kind of fees should I expect for a transmission fluid and filter change for an 05 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

Well there is always 2 options; You can flush it which would be around $150-$250 depending on the shop, or you can do what we refer to as a spill and fill, the transmission pan is removed and the filter is changed, normally $100-$200. The flush removes all the the fluid in your transmission, and trans cooler (about 12 Quarts). The other option only removes about 4 quarts of the transmission fluid and is not very effective.
