My 1998 Peugeot 406 starts okay when cold but sometimes when hot turns the engine but does not start. Peugeot dealer could not recreate fault. Immobiliser now disconnected but fault recurred. Any possibility of bimetallic strip failing in fuel injector ? Any other ideas ? (Nb low temperature cooling fan not working so car gets hot in slow traffic or on idle) Thanks Peter Heaps

I have 1996 Peugeot 406 (1.8 16v) and it's ignition coil pack was broken and the starting was difficult when the car was warm.

First check the fuel pressure, MAP sensor and engine temperature sensor. if all OK, check the earth connection and the sensors' connection. Make sure the fuel injectors are properly fixed by check the rubber seals are not faulty.

    Renew the coil pack by purchasing the Beru part made exactly for your engine though the Beru dealer. It is about half price of OEM from Peugeot.

The symptoms you have given sound to me like the timing could be off. Could be crossed wires or improperly aligned timing gears during the replacement of the belt.

Peugeot faults

The coil pack must be renewed. Go to Beru's dealer to buy or order a new one exactly for your engine. It costs about half the price from Peugeot.

My 406 1.8liter engine has a tendency to shot down when in idle and cold. after 5 miles it runs fine.

Sounds as though it may be the Throttle Position Sensor. TPS. It is on e the throttle body and sets the idle of the engine.

Hi, my 1998 Peurgeot 406 2.1 tdi is becoming problematic when starting from cold - meaning, it takes a few attempt to get the thing to start. What could be causing this? Thanks, Neil.

May be diesel injection pump is not producing enough pressure in 3 - 4 cycles of first engine start attempts or the glow plugs have gone.
try it first;
start the engine from cold and let it run for 1 or 2 minutes (enough to produce the diesel line injector pressure) and then turn the key off. Restart the engine again and if it start in the first attempt then one of the above mentioned fault is causing the problem.

Peugeot 206 2001 petrol intermitant fault with starter motor

If the starter motor is sticking, it can draw a large current. If there is power down to the starter motor while its not starting then the starter is faulty. You can test this with a multimeter or just a test bulb connected to the smaller of the two wires on the starter, while cranking.Check you have a good earth from the battery to the engine. If the bulb lights up but no engine cranking then its a faulty starter.
