There is a loud noise at 45mph.

I have a 2006 chevy equinox with 105,000 miles. When I hit 45 mph there is a loud humming noise and it goes away when I hit 50 mph. When I decelerate it will get loud again at about 45 mph but will quiet down as I slow dow. The noise is not coming from the engine, it sounds like it is coming from under the car like in the drivetrain. Transmission still feels solid, no slipping, Any help

I have the same problem, had my mechanic look at it. He said it is the 4wd transfer case. I think he said it is the electronics trying to engage the 4wd. He said this is a common problem. Repair costs is about $750.

I would look for loose body panels or even the plastic front air dam found just below and under the front bumper. Sometimes the circulating air makes the paneling vibrate and it will resonate throughout the entire vehicle. Of course there's no way to verify while driving but tightening a few screws and possibly riveting a loose air dam that may have gotten knocked loose while parking or off-road use can't hurt. Next look to the engine mounts and ensure that they are solid and have no cracks that have collapsed the units themselves letting the engine fall. I would then have a mechanic take a look at the carrier bearings on the driveshaft, and have the tires re-balanced. Has the vehicle had an alignment recently?

Find a quiet empty stretch of road. Go 50 mph, put the trans in NEUTRAL and shut the engine. If noise is still there, swing car left and right to detect noise differences. Could be hub or axle bearings. Not engine or trans if noise is still there. Hope this helps

2008 Equinox has excessive road noise between 45 & 55 mph. Loud in general but really loud at speed.

Road noise is usually related to your tires. I would go to a tire shop and have them check it out. If your alignment and tire condition in general are good it might be the stiffness or aggressiveness of the tread.

My thoughts exactly. Could also be an alignment issue (rear). It could be as simple as poorly balanced tires. Take it to a trusted mechanic. BTW: Just passed 125K on my EX.

I noticed a louder engine sound at approx 45 mph, like a humming or aceleration sound, I had the driver's side wheel bearing replaced to the tune of approx $300 but the sound still remains (the repair guy...

Chevrolet has a common problem with integral hub and wheel bearings wearing due to exessive use or lack of lubrication, the balls or rollers and races become pitted ,scored or just plain damaged which will infact cause a loud humming or growling noise. I have had some humm at about the same speed but usually they will start to make noise at any speed. I would have to hear the noise to be sure cause there are many things to cause a humming noise like odd tire wear, bad idler pully bearings, e.t.c. the tires should be lifted checked for excessive play in the bearing. Take tire off depress brake piston in just enough secure brake rotor use stethoscope spin hub while listening. maybe he replaced wrong side seen that alot, seen tire noise mistaken for bad bearing to if struts or shocks are worn can cause tires to be choppy. I would recommend taken back 300 dollars is alot of money to not fix your problem.

Loud noise in back end

lift the car up and check the wheel bearings by turning the wheels manually. Listen for any clicking noises. Move the wheel back and forth pulling it toward you. There is not supposed to be any movement or noise on the wheel if the bearings are good. if you do see any movement or hear any noises , replace the wheel bearings
