1991 jeep cherokee sport tilt steering wheel is wobbly

It seems as the steering wheel it self is solid but down in the column it is loose. The tilt part still works fine but it also wants tilt right to left, this is the wobble problem. Please help if you can. I am at a loss as to how the column comes apart to get to the knucle part of the shaft. So far I have been able to get the wheel, locking plate and turn signal cams apart but now there are contacts for the horn in the way of one of the torx head bolts. Not sure how or if it is necessary for the ignition switch to come out. Need info on how to tighten up this joint. Thanking you in advance Jim

If it was me I would go to a salvage yard and get another steering column drop it off at a lock with your key from the old one so they can match that key to the other ignition switch

Steering wheel is loose and wobbly

If the loose motion is coming from the tilt part, there are three bolts inside the column that need to be tightened up.
Someone would need to remove the steering wheel to access the bolts.

Adjustable steering column wobbles

the tilt steering wheels get loose from people using the wheel to assit them in and out of the vehicle, it is a very common problem and it is from the tilt bolts coming loose inside, if you do not have a lot of mechanical experience i dont recommend doing this your self, there are some special tools required and know how but if you can get your hands on a service mannuel then all you have to do is take the steering column apart from the wheel down to the tilt bolts and put some red lock tite on them and retighten them down

Have 1993 jeep grand cherokee sport & it wobbles on highway when either tire hits a bump

The 1st thing to check would be every steering mount points. If even one of them is loose,it will wobble like a bum over a bucket. Then check all wheel bearings.Have a look at these things first.Hope this helps

Steering column has a 1 inch wobble to it

I'm sure there are bolts holding the steering column. This
can be found under the dashboard. Just tighten it up to
correct the problem.

My steering wheel moves up and down and left and right i dont know how to fix it or figure out whats wrong

If it is the tilt steering wheel, then you have two bolts near the tilt part of it that have backed out. You need some special tools to get to the bolts, but not too hard if you can get the tool to remove the snap ring that holds the plate on. If you don't have tilt, most likely the bearings in the steering column are bad, and you would need a new steering column.

Upper streering column loose

Hi Jim,
You don't have to replace the whole column. I just had this fixed by my mechanic for 80 bucks, as I watched. There are actually 3 screws to tighten even though the instructions say 4. Tighten the 2 you can get to, but don't take them back out to put Locktite on them! My mechanic says you will NEVER get them back in again! And I believe him. But if you want to do it yourself, here is a great help. Good luck http://www.chevyasylum.com/column/tiltcol.htmlreat

Tilt steering seems to be loose on 1985 jeep cherokee

I've had a loose steering wheel/column on my Chevy S10 a few times, and each time I had to take off the steering wheel and take out some of the guts to get to the loose bolts, they were still hard to reach and i could really only tighten one really good, if you take pics as you go you won't forget where each thing goes :)

Wobbly tilt wheel

Remove horn pad . After removing the large nut SCRIBE A LINE ON THE CENTER SHAFT and the STEERING WHEEL, Using a steering wheel puller, remove steering wheel. Now comes the tricky part. Remove signal stalk ( just pull out a couple of inches ),and 4-way flasher knob. Disconnect multiple connector of signal switch. Remove 3 screws holing switch down. Gently pull upward on switch to expose lower steering bowl. The large bolts are LOOSE that secure it, so the reason for the wobble. Tighten bolts, and reverse procedure.

Broken tilt steering in a 1991 jeep cherokee

Yes it can be fixed, but it is a pain in the ****, done dozen's of them, hated every one. You are going to have to pull the steering wheel off and then remove the turn signal cam, under that you will find the screws to remove the upper bowl assembly (u will need to unplug turn signal harness at base of column), remove that, under that u will find the bolts for the tilt that have come loose
