1.3 16v carb'ed laser, starts fine, even from sitting, but has a rough idle that feels and sounds like a miss, under really low load, doing 40kpm in 4th gear with very little throttle the 'burping' is evident too. The car pulls well for a 1.3, no guts on hills - not sure if thats to be expected. Have changed the oil+ filter, air filter, sparkplugs, replaced the little bit of foam in the airbox (that links to the heat pipe thing going to the rocker cover), added a bottle of fuel cleaner (and run that all through) plus given the carb a clean with carb-cleaner spray. Since this service the fuel economy seems to have gottern worse, the original problem existed before the service. The engine bay is in good order, and has all the hoses and bits that are normally broken or thrown away (not bad for 270,000kms!). Also running on unleaded 95 ron octane (the manual says unleaded, but thats all) Any help is greatly appreciated, Thankyou.

Just trowing some suggestions out there, but, I would check the idle air control valve (solenoid) or the throttle position sensor. If they check out then my last guess would be the map sensor or the vaccuum to the map sensor. Hope I was able to help. Best wishes.

Well, of course premium is HIGHLY recommended, but it is not necessary.
You can use regular grade in your engine and it will not harm it at all. Modern engine management systems have knock sensors that detect lower grade fuel and make the necessary adjustments to your timing and fuel delivery systems.
All you will notice is slightly slower acceleration and a slight drop in engine horsepower.
Hope this helps...

Hello.
I understand your problem and the dilemma of trying to decide what fuel to use for your 2001 Cadillac Seville. Here is the problem, let me explain what you should do.
The car is designed for fuel rating above 89 octane for best overall performance. Now let me explain come mechanical mumble jumble. The car is designed to take that type of unleaded fuel at about 89 octane because its all about the way the car is designed with the emissions, Cadillac converter and 02 sensors and so forth. The problem is if you use to high of a octane it will cause eventual damage to your Cadillac converter as far as running to hot and fuel burning hotter, which sure it will give you some more horse power, but damage can come from emissions.
So here is my advice to solve the problem the best you can in your situation. Is put the lowest unleaded fuel you can get for it, which it appears based on what you said living in the UK is all they have is 95, then i would use that AND at local auto part stores every few tanks or so, ad a fuel stabilizer to the tank. It comes in a bottle and use just pour it in your tank when you fill, like maybe every forth tank. Just them you need a fuel booster or injector cleaner, this will keep things clean and flowing good, and not cause any harm to your emissions. The higher 97 octane that you have over there and gas stations is, good for older carb cars, or motorcycles, high performance foreign sports cars etc.... YOUR CAR by useing lower octane when fueling will be better for emissions, fuel mileage and if want a little more power, better to use the additive i told you about at auto parts stores, and just at a bottle of that every 3 or 4 tanks when you fill. I hope this helps , Mike , fixya expert.

timing has yet to be done, cambelt etc (and tuning the carb) to be replaced very very soon. there wasn't much of a service history when I got the car. I will checkout the EGR valve too. Thankyou!
Have you checked timing ? Ignition & valve to make sure something didn't skip a tooth or so? What type (make, model) of carburetor is it, and has anyone tried tuning it in properly? What about EGR valve?
