SOURCE: I have a '96 SAAB 900 SE Turbo auto-trans that is

my 96 900se turbo auto trans was doing the same thing. whats most likely is that the shifter cable is not fully letting the car grab the park gear, which won't let it turn on. or it may be the neutral safety swtich that needs a good cleaning or replacement. I hope this helps, in my case it was the shifter cable.

SOURCE: Saab 9-3 SE won't start!!!

My boyfriend was having the same problem with his 2002 9-3 and in reading the user manual i found the following...when the car wouldn't start this morning he tried it and instead of having to wait 15 minutes for it to start, it started right up. Oh and his screen didn't give an error.

Electronic starting interlock
(immobilizer)
When the key is inserted in the ignition, a
signal is sent to the receiver. If the signal is
verified, the engine can be started.
Each time the key is removed from the ignition,
the electronic immobilizer is activated.
If a fault is detected (e.g. in the transmitter)
”KEY NOT ACCEPTED” will appear on the
SID.
In this case, you can still start the car if you
turn the ignition key to ON and press one of
the buttons on the key.
Take the car to an authorized Saab dealer to
have the system checked.

If the car does not start
If the text "KEY NOT ACCEPTED" appears
on the SID when the engine refuses to start,
the trouble may be a fault in the transponder
of the key or in the receiver of the ignition
switch. Proceed as follows:
• Turn the key back to the LOCK position.
• Turn the key to the ON position.
• Press one of the buttons on the remote
control (the LED on top of the dash stops
flashing).
• Start the engine.
Try the other key. If it works, the trouble is in
the first key.
Call on an authorized Saab dealer for
inspection and correction

2001 SAAB 9-3 SE won't send signal to start

Is your SAAB automatic? If so, it is most likely the Neutral Safety Switch. I have had the same problem, it is very common in automatic Saab 9-3 models made in 1999-2002.

I have a warning light on and dont know what it means brakes

barry
i believe this is your dynamic stability control (DSC (or ASC on some cars)) light if its a triangle with an exclemation point in it. you have either turned off the DSC (look for the button to turn it back on by pushing it) or there is a problem with the system. the light should go out when you turn the car off, then restart it, so more likely its a problem with the system.

1999 Saab 9-5 SE

I own a  99' 9-5 V6 turbo SE.  Had the same thing.  Started smelling gas in the car, sometimes.  Instead of not starting it died (as in the engine stopped) on a barren stretch of road at night.  Towed to the Saab dealer: Conclusion?  Replaced the fuel pump and sending unit. Don't ask how much.
