Chevy is known for using a cheap grade of wiring harnesses that corrode over time and short out. my 93 s10 blazer had a bad wire in the transmission harness resulting in only 2nd and 3rd gear and wouldnt shift by itself, i dont know if im right but something to check into.

Check VSS Vehicule Speed Sensor wire may be corroted, bad connection or faulty; if 2wd the adaptor is located on the extension housing of the transmission (left side)
if 4wd look on transfer case extension (left side)
Good luck

A common problem on the 2003 focus are the electrics, i had a problem recently where the displays where not functioning, i took off the panel, checked the iso connector and before putting it back in i gave it a quick spray with wd40 and it al seemed to work, been in contact with the garage and for a new unit with callibration you are looking about £140 or so with labour and parts

I did pretty much the same thing that motor1258 did. This was on my third gauge cluster to be in the car. This solution simply does not work. Yeah whacking the top of the dash will sometimes get the gauges to work but not always. I have a bit of a temper and would get pretty annoyed by their non-compliance. I ended up breaking my dash from hitting it too much. So now I had a broken dash on top of my stubborn gauges. I just found a solution online that should be a permanent fix. Basically you take the gauges out, take them apart and re-sodder the pens on each plug back to the circuit board. I am going to try it and hopefully this ends my frustration.
