Is it okay to use purple royal on a 1988 mazda rx7 and if so how thick(5w30-10w40etc)
Any synthetic oil is ok... just follow mfg recommended oil weights.
One note though... adding synthetics to a dirty engine will only lead to dirty and VERY expensive synthetic oil.
Best to do a 3 change flush with standard oil and Rislone or another brand of engine flush. 3 change, meaning add Rislone, drain and replace 3 times. Driving at least 500 miles between oil changes. This will prep your engine to accept the very expensive yet very good synthetic oil while minimizing contaminants that would reduce the benefits of syn oil.
Hope this helps M8
Oh My God!! This is NOT correct..... Mazda rotary engines shouldd never have synthetic oil used. For some reason synthetic does not play well with rotor seals. Use conventional oil as specified. And, I'd normally never recommend conventional oil (huge Amsoil fan) except in this case. It is documented out here on the www. somewhere that this is true. Keep searching for info about it or when I get a chance I could point you to it.

Are you sure you want to start using it. Yes it is a great product but it wont bring an old engine, magically, back to life. If anything it is thin like moble-1. So on an old engine it could start to leak oil from the main seals and/or start to smoke from worn rings. and royal purple is a full synthetic. Don't mix it with conventional oil.
Using synthetic oil in a rotary engine can damage the side and apex seals causing the engine to loose compression or seize and not start. The engie has oil jets that actually spray a small amount of oil into the housing to lubricate areas the normal oil pick up system can't. The synthetic oil doesn't fully burn leaving a residue causing damage to the engine. Just use a thicker viscosity oil, especially if you are in a harsh hot desert environment. Read the service/ owner manual.
Yea, this is what I mean.
