1996 Grand Am dies when i slow down

I have a 1996 Grand am that runs just fine, until i slow down.  When approaching a stop light/sign i have to throw it into neutral to keep the idle from dropping and making the car die out.   I cant sit at a stop light/sign with my foot on the brake or it most of the time it will die.  Any ideas on what could be wrong with it?  or how to fix it?

Try adjusting the idle and changing the fuel filter.

At lower RPMs it is rough running with slight amount of smoke until warm and there is a loss of power at the bottom end of the gears. Once a certain rpm is reached (no tach) it snaps to life. New plug

What color is the smoke?
Black means running rich.
Gray or white is coolant
Blue is oil.
This shounds to me like a fuel system issue. Injectors might be bad

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee. When I stop at a light engine revs up and feels like it is trying to push the car. Then the car dies.It will start back and run fine after that.

Could be a sticking idle air control valve, or dirty throttle body.
The computer uses the valve to control idle speed by regulating the amount of air into the intake.

Check for vacuum leaks on all hoses underhood. Make sure all intake componets are intact and they are tight.

Is the check engine light on? If so, get to an auto parts store, they should pull the codes for free.

Sounds almost like a bad throttle position sensor. The computer uses the TPS to help know when to shift on this car if I remember right, and if the TPS is bad, it can cause that jerking. Along with the car dying when slowing down after driving. But check everything else out first. Including electrical connections.

Van dies while at a stop sign or light won't start back until moved manually

take a little time to check the air/fuel filters and spark plugs if you have not done so in a long time. all of those things will cause the van to stall at light or stop sign. replace all items that need replaceing. a little service work will keep your van running for a long time.

First starting in the morning the 1996 jeep cherokee classic fires right up, backs out of the driveway, is able to go into forward and go down the block, at the stop sign there, it dies, and, until it...

Check out your cold start choke. It is designed to cause your fuel mixture to run "rich" until it warms up. It is basically a heat sensitive coil that reacts to heat from the exhaust manifold.

1997 Bonneville stalls and dies on the road

Shell has had issues with contaminated fuel in the past cant recall what it was but it actually damaged the fuel pump. I hope thats not the issue here can get costly in some cases fuel pumps on GM are a whole assembly. DOes the gas gauge still read properly? This was a big tell with the contamination last time. Gauge would read empty even when full.

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee stalls when brakes are applied

My 2000 Grand Cherokee had the same problem, without all the sputtering, it would just die approaching a stop. We could only keep it running by slightly pushing down on the gas petal when coming to a stop. I replaced the Throttle Position Sensor, but that didn't change anything. A new mechanic I found replaced the Idle Air Control Valve, and we've had no problems in a week.
