I need to replace an o2 sensor in my 1997 bonneville

Which O2 sensor ? Bank 1 sensor 1 or bank 1 sensor 2 or bank 2 sensor 1 or bank 2 sensor 2 . What size engine ?

If you have never replaced your O2 sensors it is well past time. The normal service life for O2 sensors is generally 60-75K. Your vehicle probably has a good 200K which means you should replace all of the oxygen sensors. These sensors are a major input to the engine management computer ...specifically providing info about fuel mixture. When the O2 sensors fail they provide bogus information; replace them all and you'll find your Bonny will run a *whole* lot better.

#1 is the up-stream sensor (The O2 sensor located before the Catalytic Convertor). #2 is the down-stream O2 sensor. This sensor is located after the Catalytic Convertor. I hope this helps, let me know if you have other questions concerning this issue. Good luck.

Your faulty O2 sensor can create EGR problems. Start with just replacing the O2 sensor and see if the rest self corrects.

Your vehicle will have 2 O2 sensors. One before the catalytic converter and one after. replacing the O2 sensor will likely not solve your high idle issue. An O2 sensor that has gone bad will likely set a code and turn on the check engine light. Is the check engine light on?

I assume you have a 3.1 liter V-6?

The left exhaust manifold will be the one closest to the radiator. The righ will be the one closest to the firewall.

Facing the engine, look at the back of engine and down. It will be mounted on the manifold.
