Grinding then starting

Jeep had trouble starting this morning. There was a grinding noise and then it started.

Difficult shifting into gears, shakes some times but when I rev the engine it goes away. Replaced starter last month and the batter/alternator were fine.

98 Jeep Wrangler will shift when off but not while running makes grinding noise.

There is something wrong with the clutch. Make sure that there is enough clutch fluid in it. For some reason the clutch isn't disengaging like it should, so you are grinding the gears in your transmission, making that awful noise. You want to get it looked at before you ruin your transmission by stripping the gears.

I was driving to work this morning and was in 3rd gear, went to down shift at a stop sign and its stuck in 3rd gear. 1988 jeep wrangler. It has been grinding the gear for a few weeks now everytime I change...

The 3rd Gear Synchro is worn or damaged, which is why it grinds when you try to upshift or downshift into 3rd gear. When it goes out completely you will have a very hard time shifting into 3rd gear, since the Synchro lines up the gears to make shifts smooth and easy.

Cherokee intermitant grinding noise in neutral

Is it when the engine first starts? It sounds like to me that the starter is getting stuck in the fly wheel. what happens is when you go to start it, the solenoid push's the gear out and spins the gear almost one full action, the grinding noise could be the starter staying engaged after the motor has starter but quickly comes out of it after driving out of it. just a thought.

Jeep Wrangler 1998 straight drive has difficult times going into reverse gear. I don't drive it every day, usually towing it behind my RV. It seems better when I drive it more, but is still difficult to...

if this is a 5 speed manual transmission...all you need to do before putting your jeep into reverese is puting it into first gear and then shifting it to reverse to avoid any grinding or problems shifting into reverse...this isn't a problem just a poor jeep design by not installing an extra gear to eliminate this grinding or shifting problem
