1988 volvo 740 gle non-turbo loud fuel pump

When I drive my 88 volvo 740 gle my car will suddenly become very weak and won't go over 30mph and starts missing really bad. I can press the gas pedal to the floor and it just gets worse. Some days if If I baby it, it will do just fine. When it starts acting up, the fuel pump is very loud. I have a new main fuel pump on the care and just recently replaced the fuel pressure regulator. Any ideas?

Have you tried replacing the fuel filter? It is located under the cars center on the left side ..

You will find it alongside the main high pressure fuel pump on a metal support plate held up with 3 bolts.
Remove the 3 bolts with a 10mm socket wrench to lower the plate. Place a catch pan below the filter to catch any leaking fuel.
Be careful not to get fuel in you eyes or running down your arms. Remove the 2 bolts holding the banjo fuel pipe connections to the filter.
Note the direction of the filter.
Loosen the clamp holding the filter to the support plate and slide out the old filter.
Install the new filter in the same direction as the old one and use new copper sealing washers on the banjo connections.

I had the same problem. Our Volvos have two fuel pumps, one pump failed. I could only go 25 mph. I replaced the fule pump inside the t fule tank, now it works fine. If you have a way to test the fuel pressure do it. It may tell you if it's the pamp.

Trans code number automatic tranny 88 volvo

Hello. i have owned many 740's, 240's, 122's, and 850's. I have done my fair share of transmission swaps. The transmission tag is located right above the trans-oil pan and directly below the od seloind on the drivers-side. if your volvo 740 is a non-turbo, the transmission is AW-70L, if it is a turbo-model then it is AW-71L. Good luck :)

I have a 88 volvo 740 GLE and it wont fire.

The problem wont be your timing belt. you need to take out a spark plug plug it into your HT lead and check for a strong spark or even if there is a spark. check your contact breakers on the distributor as well

if it works leave well alone till it starts getting noisy, its a 1985 ,over 20yrs old so it wont last much longer till it fails the annual vehicle technical inspection, then when you need a part for the suspension or steering its obsolete.

1988 Volvo 740 cold condition, started short, cannot start again

Check the fuel pump fuse and fuel pump relay first, before replacing the fuel pump. The fuses and relays are behind the the ash tray, The fuses are labelled. The relay is on the left side of the relay rack, closest to the big round bulb out sensor. But before that, how about pouring some gas line anti-freeze or fuel injector cleaner into the tank?
