My 1997 nissan truck has been sitting and won't start

If I put gas directly in the hole where the air filter goes it will start, but as soon as I stop putting gas in that hole the engine stops.

  • inlikeflynn2 Apr 04, 2009

I was able to start it a couple of weeks ago, but I did let the gas tank run almost dry.

  • inlikeflynn2 Apr 05, 2009

turned out it was the fuel pump. thanks

How long has it been sitting? After several months the gas breaks down and goes bad. I have let a car sit for a year, and start w/out a problem, but any longer than that, and you will probably have to drop the gas tank and clean it out, along w/ the fuel lines, and check the fuel pump, as it may be plugged up. Last, change the fuel filter.

How much gas is in the tank now? If there is enough to pump thru the lines, 1st check the fuel filter, it may have gotten plugged up from drawing up sediment and crud from the bottom of the tank. If you still have a problem then the fuel pump is most likely the issue.

The truck will run great as long as i am on the gas and going as soon as i slow down to come to a stop it will want to choke out it would seem like. it stalls out unless i put it in neutral, why?

had this exact thing occur in my car a couple of days ago. I lifted the bonnet and the air filter pipe was blown off from the filter box and a hole was in the box the air filter sits in. This was caused by a back fire problem my car has . I put the air filter pipe back on the box and have a piece of timber and gaffa tape covering the huge hole and my car runs ok until I can yet it serviced and fixed .

What are the correct items for a full tune-up for my 1997 nissan maxima gxe?

This model uses direct ignition, which means each cylinder has a coil sitting on top of the spark plug, no distributor.
So - - air filter - fuel filter - spark plugs.
There are things that need to be done at a certain mileage which would be in your owners manual. Such as the serpentine belt, trans fluid change, coolant fluid change, etc.

Wont start after sitting over night when starting have to give gas than it starts 1997 nissan maxima

This problem is often caused by a defective fuel pump pressure check valve, this allows the fuel in the lines and the filter to drain back into the tank, this causes hard starting. The pressure check valve is part of the fuel pump so you must replace the fuel pump to correct the problem, the fuel p[ump is located inside the fuel tank.

Hi,
You have to check and replace the spark plugs, ignition( if there is still sparks coming out ), and replace fuel fitler( drain also the fuel line of old petrol ).
You need a good technician to restart and tune it up!
Hope that helps you out.

We have a 1997 chevy lumina that has been sitting for over a year. New battery, new fuel filter and air filter, but still won't start. Any ideas?

It is probably bad gas. I guarantee it. If it started when you put it there, bad gas. You will have to drain the gas out by tanking the tank off or by going through the float hole. If you have a question, please let me know. I am here to help you. Thank you for choosing FixYa.

1997 nissan frontier fuel filter location

These are the steps to replace a fuel filter.
Get the new filter from a store. Get rubber gloves and a plastic bag. Get plyers, phillip and regular screw drivers, and hole plugs.
Turn off engine. (Put out all cigarettes/cigars etc)

1) Loosen the gas cap to release pressure.
2) Put on gloves. You will get gas on your hands.
3) Loose the clamp on the top of the filter.
4) Work off hose on top of filter. Use plyers twisting back-and-forth and pulling up or pry up using regular screw driver or pry up using long-nose plyer under the rubber pipe edge. This will be harder than it looks. keep filter upright.
5) Plug the hole in the top of the filter. (It's filled with gas)
6) Loosen clamp on the bottom of the filter.
7) Cover filter with plastic bag.
8) Turn the filter down
9) Work off the hose on the bottom of filter.

To replace the filter reverse the above steps in reverse.
Plug the hole in the bottom of filter and dispose of the filter as per regulation.
