The part that is known to fail in these engines that causes no spark is the Crankshaft position sensor, it is located on th right side of the bell housing as u stand in front of truck, it must be changed from below the truck and is very difficult to get at, here is a photo of the sensor and a brief description of the repair

the aspect of this photo is top u are looking from the trans towards the engine block, bottom same view different angle.

    A. This was a widespread problem for Chrysler and they issued a couple of TSBs to address the problem. The first was:

    Models:
1989 MJ & XJ Bodies ( Grand c. and CJ jeeps)

    Subject:
4.0L No-Start, Hard Restart, or Engine Die-Out. Vehicles Equipped With Automatic Transmission Only.

    Index:
    DRIVEABILITY

    Date: December 29, 1989 No.: 18-57-89 (C18-23-9) P-14

    Body Code Legend:
    MJ - COMANCHE (RWD, 4WD) XJ - CHEROKEE/WAGONEER (RWD, 4WD)

    SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Some 1989 vehicles equipped with the 4.0L engine and automatic transmission may experience an engine no-start, hard restart, or an engine die-out. This condition may be caused by low signal strength from the crank position sensor due to a larger than desired distance to the flywheel sensing ring.

1990 jeep Cherokee won't run but will crank. I hooked my battery up backwards? Everything else in and on my jeep works replaced ignition coil , distributor cap and rotor Any suggestions?

Ign module could be the problem do you have spark when cranking. If you have spark can you hear the fuel pump running while cranking. Let me know

My 89 jeep cherokee won't. Start it will turn over

what motor? is the coil producing spark?? If so, check the fuel pressure, if the fuel pressure is low drop the tank, repace the pump and also replace the filter (located on the frame forward of the tank). If the coil is not producing spark, check for shorts or opens in the circuits as well as the IGN fuses. If there is NO fuel pressure at all check the fuel pump fuses and make sure the fuel pump is plugged in and there are no opens in the circuit

1995 jeep cherokee limited, motor cranks but will not start, smells like getting too much fuel

Then its probably not getting spark. You should test for spark. Probably a bad ignition coil. If you get a code reader hooked up to it and it says P.I.P. circuit failure than it is the pickup sensor in the bottom of the distributor. Could also have the Ignition control module tested. But probably just the ignition coil.

I have an 89 Jeep Cherokee and it will crank over but not start

O2 sensor will not do that. Check the basics...do you have fuel...Do you have spark? I would make a bet on it either being a crank position sensor or fuel filter. Next good guess is the ignition coil. Check these items (in order) and see what you find. Test specs are found in any manual. (if you need specifics I can give them to you. You will need a decent volt/ohm meter to test.

No spark at coil

check ignition pick-up coil and ignition module

Jeep won't start

Check voltage at coil. Check coil output (spark should be healthy even at 1/4" away from ground). If OK, then change module The only testing on module is with a special tool. Therefore if contacts are clean, that's all you can do with it!
