2000 S-80 shift lever stuck intermittengly in park.Volvo service rep has no answer except to say, it must be electrical/electronic; thus, to replace some/all of the following: solenoid( replaced ; problem persistes); replace brake switch( replaced -probelem persists). Now, Volvo rep would say replace CEM( $ 1500) but can't say if inop.
Volvo can't solve problem. Independent thinks that problem could be mechanical but can't solve.
Ok i know this is going to sound off the wall but follow me please. first is this a floor shift? i beleive it is if so than down inside the shifter area you have a solenoid there, is that what you replaced? if so did you clean all the moving parts? what happens alot of times a drink or something gets spilled down there one time or another and causes the mechanism to stick intermittantly which in case sauses to not come out of park. chesk this and let me know if I can be more assistance.
what it sounds to me is that there is still dirt and stickky substance in that area if it was not thouroughly cleaned, everything taken apart , not just spray a cleaner in there.
what happens even though they probabaly just sprayed a cleaner in there and let the cleaner do the work, there is still some residue in there and what happens its still sticky so what it is doing is making that solenoid work harder and taking longer for it to disengage from the safety mode for park.
From my experience, the parts have to be completely removed, cleaned thoroughly and lubricated very well. if this is done this should take care of your problem.
thats exactly what I have been trying to tell you, i have about 27 years experience as a technician and like i said before from my experience that is the problem, see there is a difference between a tech and a mechanic a mechanic is a parts changer, they keep replacing parts till the problem is reso;lved.
A tech is someone who finds the problem and fixes the problem.
I am a certified technician
master tech to be precise.
if yopu find a good technician have them take the whole shifting mechanism apart and clean and lube as I explained before.
by applying ground and power and see if it activates by using 12v source.
Your very welcome and please don't forget to rank this chat.
Thank you.
Also when the other tech dismantles it does a thourough cleaning and lubricates it, make sure he makes note on the invoice so you can get a full refund from volvo, make sure that when you have this you go straight to the general manager and tell them what had happened, usually they will make sure that you have a full refund.

Try the following
1. Check if the parking brake is OK. Do you using it at all.
If you do not using it and if there is a slop on surface the pressure on car make shift lever stuck. In case you using it again if it is not good any more it doesnot do job.
Also try to use parking brake before shifting into park position
2. Next time it happends try to step on brake and stir the stirring wheel a little and try to release the lever
The problem is common on S80
If replacing the solenoid in the auto gear shift system did not solve the problem, and the brake lock switch had already been tested (not only replaced), that may be related to a wiring problem on the brake light circuit, that locks the gears in stuck position.
In this case, try the following:
1) Turn the engine back off.
2) turn the key to accessory position
3) depress brake pedal
4) move shift lever into neutral and start engine.
5) put into desired gear
If that does not unlock, there is need to taste wiring to brake circuit to find out if any problem in there is preventing car from shifting out of park position.
You find more on same subject here.
If you cannot shift out of PARK (P), ease the pressure on the shift lever. Push the shift lever all the way into PARK (P) as you maintain brake application. Then move the shift lever into the gear you want. If you are still having a problem shifting, then have your vehicle serviced soon.

The first component replaced by Volvo was the solenoid. The problem persisted. Then, Volvo said it could be one/combination of 4 components---CEM, shift module, relay, brake swaitch. Volvo insisted that the problem was not mechanical. Then , Volvo said that it was probably either the CEM( $ 1500) or the brake switch( $ 155). Volvo said that it could not isolate the problem , because the lever functioned propeley when towed to Vovle( some lever adjusted mechanicallyby the Tower).
I had the brake switch replaced. The problem persisted.I then took the car to an independent who cleaned out the area near the solenoid. There was gunk( as you say, probably from spilled coffe). The lever worked for several days, then days hung up.For some reason, if you run the engine for awhile before activiating the lever, it works(wouldn't work at all on a recent cool morning).
At this point, neither Volvo or the i ndependent has a soluyion to this persistent problem,
Do I gather that you do not beleive that the initial problem was caused by some electricl/electrronic malfunction ( as Volvo has contened all along)?
If the problem is simply not gunk , is there a component that could malfunctioning ( mechanically ?
If the lever sticks tomorrow when it a bit cooler, i will try the suggestion--put key in accessory., then into N .
The lever stuck this morning. The accessory postion suggestion didn't work. However, i let the engine run for about 10 min; then tried again.it worked.Perhaps, there is still gunk which gets liquified when the car heats up.
Thanks --I am going to ask the independent to dismantle the shifting mechanism.
If i determine that the problem was purely menchanical, then Volvo owes me $ for the solenoid and the braskd switch. let me ask one mre Q--How does one determine by testing if the solenoid is operational or defective?
I don't think that Volvo knew how to analyze the problem. They kept saying that it was electrical but unable to diagnose because the lever, by actions of the towing co., always worked when towed to Volvo.
Yes, the various comments/suggestions assisted me , most likely,in eliminating electrical components as the source of the problem. Also, they assisted me in directing a method of cleaning to the Independent who is now being asked to continue to remedy thid annoying problem( which Volvo can't sove--simpy wanting to replace one electrical component after another.
