Wondering if I can change the starter on my 2003 Montana with a starter from a 2002 Montana?

I just picked up a 2003 Pontiac Montana, the previous owner said the starter was gone, replaced it with one from a 2002 Montana, however the motor won't turn over at all, wondering if I need to look at a different starter or do I need to look into something deeper?

PUT A BREAKER BAR ON ENGINE CRANKSHAFT BOLT AND SEE IF YOU CAN GET THE ENGINE TO TURN OVER BY HAND,IF IT WONT TURN, SOUNDS LIKE SOMEONE SOLD YOU A EHICLE WITH A LOCKED UP ENGINE. GOOD LUCK!!!!1

check the coolant level fiirst...if that is low it wont give you any heat.....to change the thermostat you have to follow the top radiator hose to the engine.at the send of it you will see a clamp take it loose...then you will see the thermostat housing its held in place by 2 bolts . once you remove them you have the thermostat....make sure you clean all the old gasket material off both the housing and mount.also make sure you get a new gasket.

SOURCE: Changing the starter solenoid on a 2000 Pontiac Montana

On your van the solenoid is attached to the starter. If you can get a solenoid separate (i don't know if you can) then you will need to take the starter off and remove the solenoid (2 screws holding it on) and the wires (on red and one black i believe) pay attention to which wire goes where because you don't want to reverse it on the new solenoid.

I beleive you need to change the Power Window Switches Module in the drivers side door panel, as these connections are interlinked within this module and it is usually the first part that fails. Especially that you already changed the switches & motor in the passenger door and it still does not work. Once you remove the dual switch module in the driver's side door, you will understand what I mean. Plus it is really easy to access. Good luck! I have the same model, Claude

The problem is most likely a bad connection at the battery or the underhood fuse panel behind the battery. Recheck these connections and included the ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature) sensor (wires and harnesses).

Fuel system? Relative to how gasoline engines work, one that has sat during the 8-hour workday is nearly as 'cold' as one which has sat overnight (overnight will dip mebbe 30*F more, but this is practically irrelevant to an engine). The one major variable is volatility of the gasoline, which is affected by atmospheric temp especially when the engine isn't warmed-up. Starting this month (and continuing until fall) the 'blend' of gasoline will change from 'winter' to slower-vaporizing 'summer' in most regions of the country; you may have it now, or from some specific gas station.

If the car's Inlet Air Temperature (IAT) sensor (in the airbox), is faulty and reading too high, then the combination could push your engine 'over the edge' in terms of the PCM trying to set the proper richness for 'cold start.'

What exactly does it do when you turn the Key? Are there any dashboard lights staying on that normally go out when you turn the key to position 2?
Does it do absolutely 'Nothing' with the dash lights staying on? Does it do nothing but the dash lights go off?
Dash lights go off and you get a 'Clunk' noise?
Absolutely nothing suggests security system or the actual ignition key/barrel. This often has a light on the dash shaped like a key. Nothing but the lights go off could be the starter solenoid. Lights of and a 'clunk' could possibly be the starter itself.
The solenoid will be bolted directly to the starter motor. It's the smaller barrel shaped section on the side of the actual starter motor.

Can you put a transmission from a 2002 chevy impala in a 1999 Saturn sw2

about replacing a transmission with one from a Junkyard or cross referencing them. and to show you that not all 4T65E transmissions are interchangeable, although they look alike. Guys with the comp g package or the Impala police option often find this out the hard way.
Your car and the potential donor car will have a tag in the trunk (usually under the spare tire cover) that lists the RPO codes for your car, along with your VIN. RPO=Regular Production Order. Several of these codes relate to the transmission, and you will need them to begin to find a proper match. If you can't find the RPO tags, you can look up the RPOs for a nominal fee ($5) according to the VIN number at the following website: www . compnine . com .
I know these transmissions are different in at least 5 areas, and you have to match each area for a proper swap.
FIRST is the transmission type, which relates to torque converter size, the strength of the internal gears, and the strength of the differential. Here are the basic types along with their RPO codes:
M15 - 245 mm (9.6 in) torque converter
MN3 - 258 mm (10.2 in) torque converter
MN7 - 258 mm (10.2 in) torque converter and heavy-duty gearbox and differential (see 4T65E-HD)
MD7 - 245 mm (9.6 in) torque converter (Chinese version)
M76 - 245 mm (9.6 in) torque converter (with all-wheel drive capability)
You will want a match these RPO codes.
SECOND is the final drive ratio. The PCM can detect the difference, and in some cars may not engage if the correct final drive is not present. Here are the RPO codes for the four different final drives used in the transmission.
FQ3 - RATIO TRANSAXLE FINAL DRIVE 2.86;
FR2 - RATIO TRANSAXLE FINAL DRIVE 2.93;
F83 - RATIO TRANSAXLE FINAL DRIVE 3.05;
FR9 - RATIO TRANSAXLE FINAL DRIVE 3.29;

THIRD is the converter stall speed. There will be small differences for most cars as it is based on car weight as well as final drive value and engine ratings. Reusing the cars original torque converter will address that area. Some indication of stall speed value is given in the K-factor information in the above gmtuners page. FOURTH, the torque converter needs to have the correct lockup clutch friction material for the PCM that controls it (regardless of HD nor not). This changed over the years. The newer ones can be used on older transmissions with calibration changes, but older type in newer transmissions will fail. Reusing the cars original torque converter will address that area.
FIFTH is area is electrical compatibility, and this is what trips up a lot of guys. 3 different electrical interfaces to the transmissions were used from 97-08. Some of these differences had to do with how the PCM determined what gear the transmission was in, or was commanded to be in. If you look on a GM parts web site, you will see that three different internal harnesses are available for the 4T65E. Each of the three harnesses is listed below along with the cars that use the harness. Your car and the donor car will have to match. If you have any additional insight, please leave me a comment and I can correct this post.

How do you boost a dead battery

Sounds like a bad starter solenoid, or starter. Change the starter solenoid.If bad no click to energize starter. Good-Day!

2002 pontiac montana wont start battery tested good vehicle completely dead no lights, radio, etc. Ground connection good termenals clean. Would alternator be the next thing to try???

no Alternator wont stop it from starting or rolling over as long as good battery...try connections on starter..that would be what i looked for first
