Will start at times and wont sometimes.
Have a 1992 Jeep Cherokee sport, 4 l.
Same issues.
2 causes
1) Neutral starter switch needs replacing or
2) Faulty Crank shaft sensor , needs to be replaced.
Throwing it in neutral , then start is a temporary solution to 1).
2) check sensor - may be corroded.
Mine does the same thing. I have to push the shifter back to turn it off and pull shifter towards me to turn on. The red line on gear box is out of place ...
Push the gear shifter forward and try to start it. i have a 92 jeep cherokee laredo and it does that sometimes.

it doesnt click like its the starter. the batteries has a charge. sometimes you turn the key and theres nothing
I've got the same problem in my 1996 Cherokee Sport. If you jiggle the shifter while holding the ignition key on, it will probably crank. I'm not sure what this means, and I am looking around on the web. I've seen at least two other similar complaints but no solid answer on how to fix it.
Maybe we should all get together.

I have a 96 Cherokee Sport with the same issue. Usually it starts fine on first start and then after driving it for a few minutes and shutting it off, when I try to start again -- nothing. I find that if you hold the ignition key on and move the shifter a little , it will start. I don't know what that means. I have seen this problem posted elsewhere on the web by at least two other jeep owners.. but the cause does not seem to be obvious. Maybe we should all get together.

when it wont start what will it do? if it sounds like the starter it will make a clicking sound but first make sure the battery cables are good its a common problem for the positive cable to go bad from corrosion on those jeeps
