Thanks for all the helpful info. When I turn the key on the pump comes on and I have gas and pressure at the engine. I will check the fuel pressure. But the relay is turning on and causing the pump to kick on. Once I get the car running I can drive it around and it runs great no cutting out or anything that is what's is puzzling me.

yep i seen it in happen .i was at a gas station a guy drove car to the gas station on empty.he fill his tank up .could not get it to crank .some cars you have to restart fuel pump when run out of gas. like chrysler.you use a scanner. but chervrolet you run low over heat damage the pump.it has to stay submerge gas to keep it cool. check fuel pump pressure.it should be 41 - 47 psi.

SOURCE: no power to fuel pump

check the tan- lt green wire on the fuel relay that is located on the right fender, mine wasn't pushed in all the way, this wire shut down injectors and fuel pump, if you are looking for the shut off switch to reset the relay, it is on the passagers side floor board under the dash, gas two wires, orange and pink, I don't remember the color of the stripes, I removed this switch and wired them together without a problem

The fuel pump went out i replaced it and also replaced fuel filter the car ran great for 2 days then just cut out and now it almost startsbut wont i checked the rail to see if gas is gatting to the in

One guy mentioned carb cleaner. I would use starting fluid due to the fact that if it is a fuel problem the car will run for a few seconds on starting fluid. If it won't run on starting fluid then it's an ignition issue. If it runs on the starting fluid then check the inertia switch & fuel pump relay.

97 mercury mountaineer. won't start

hi,

watch your oil pressure when cranking, you have to have some oil pressure to get the fuel system to start. you may have to find the hot wire at the relay and energize it to see if it is indeed the fuel pump going out. if its been sitting and its a 97 the fuel pump just might have went, you can also try hitting the gas tank from the outside in the middle to see if that works too. have a water hose or fire extinguisher around when your working on fuel system and leave one of your battery cable a little loose..

Bad fuel pump, clogged filter or bad fuel pressure regulator. If you put starting fluid in the intake, does it start up? Your fuel pump should start running as soon as you turn the key to "on" You only had to crank over older engines to pump the fuel. They used to use crankshaft driven fuel pumps back in the day, but now they are all electric. Since they are electric, it should have a fuse, and a relay associated with it. Check fuse and see if relay pulls in when key is switched to 'on'.

You need to check fuel pressure at the fuel rail.if pressure is at spec. Check spark at the plugs. Also replace relay for fuel pump if it isn't working. Could be a bad new fuel pump. Pull the codes first.

Fuel pump relay working intermitently.

is the relay ok? i think what you are hearing could be 2 relays at the same time. i think the fuel relay works with another aluminium looking one. there's usually a few of them that are identical so you can swop to check.
