Was your key just metal on its own, (like a front door key), or was it one where the bit you hook the key ring through (and grip when you start the vehicle) was plastic? If it was a plastic bodied type it will have a transponder chip in it so you'll need a new 'programmed' key.
The problem is the ign. lock cylinder NOT the key. The tiny wires have broken and you need to get the ign . lock cylinder replaced and a new chip key to fit it.
You need to replace the ign lock cylinder and chip key with correct chip in it to fix car. The anti thieft system is part of the computer. Part number LC62060 at autozone Cylinder comes with key for cutting template only, will not start car. Correct resistance key required.
Hello edspring1...the little key chip you mentioned is the onboard security system for your firebird...GM called it the VAT system..it's possible this could be the cause of the no start conditions, sometimes they will reset if you disconnect the negative battery cable for 30 mins. I really dont think that is your problem though...under the steering pillar...there is a "slider" type ignition switch...meaning...the terminals slide togather to make contact when the key is turned...these darn things get worn to a point they start arching and eventually wont make contact at all...i replaced one last week on a 95 firebird that had the same problem you are describing now. i'll post a pic of the slider set in position for a tilt steering and non-tilt column....note the difference. Good luck...i hope this helps...please rate me a fixya.
i had same problem with a broken white wire.you need to go to dealer with you old key to match that chip with new keys and purcase a ignition switch at the same time
Can you please tell me what part was replaced on you ignition system.
If you have changed the ECU or the IGN key switch they need to be fitted in matched pairs as the key switch is match coded to the ECU
Unless you purchase a brand new one that will be blank but must be coded by the dealer or someone with the correct software.
Inside the key is a small chip that tells the ECU it is a match & lets the car start.
The mechanics of most key switchs can be replaced but you must put the chip from your old key into the newly fitted key.
Some cars like Mercedes have the key switch coded & the key so they talk to each other & they must also be coded to the ECU as well.
Nothings ever simple is it.
