VSS is the Vehicle Speed Sensor; newer vehicles no longer have a speedometer cable, the speedometer is electronic and receives a signal from the VSS located on the transmission. No signal from the VSS will set a code, cause the speedometer to malfunction and interfer with the ABS system.

Whee is the output speed sensor located on a 97 chevy lumina

Was there a trouble code listed with problem, if so, what was the code? I'm aware of wheel speed sensors and I'm aware of vss, if there is another one, then I'm not aware.

The vss/vehicle speed sensor should be located in halfshaft housing for transaxle.

The wheel speed sensors are usually located at the wheels.

Speedometer won't work in 97 Astro, replaced sensor..help

What sensor ? VSS - vehicle speed sensor on the transmission ? Colud be the speedometer gauge is bad . Do you know how the insturment cluster get's that info. ? Your best bet , take it to a qualified repair shop . You have no idea how it works , don't have the diagnostic tool's to find the problem ,so do yourself a favor . The first step would be to hook up a factory or professional type scan tool to see if the VSS info is seen in the VCM ,then to see what the VCM is sending over the serial data network . Do you know what a serial data communication network is ? VCM is vehicle control module .
Speedometer and Odometer Circuit Description
An electronic speedometer is standard equipment on all models. Integrated circuits control the air core speedometer and the stepper motor odometer. Removable bulb and socket assemblies provide the lighting. The socket assembly inserts into the back of the instrument cluster.
The speedometer system consists of the following components:
• The instrument cluster
• The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) calibrator
• The VSS
• The related wiring
The VSS calibration is part of the VCM that changes the analog output from the VSS to a digital signal. The digital signal contains 4000 pulses per mile (PPM) for the instrument cluster. The VCM sends the signal to the speedometer through CKT 389. The VSS calibration matches to the final drive and the tire size of each vehicle. Reprogram the VCM with the proper VSS calibration if the final drive or tire size changes for any reason. The signal will not be accurate for the proper speedometer/odometer operation if the necessary change is not made. An incorrect VSS calibrator can also affect the following components:
• The antilock brakes
• The vehicle control module (VCM)
The cruise control systems
The VSS calibration is programmed into the VCM. Do not service the VSS calibrator separately.
The VSS is a permanent magnet signal generator that sends an analog signal proportional to the propeller shaft speed to the VCM. The VSS mounts to the transmission tailshaft extension housing on the two-wheel drive model. The VSS mounts to the transfer case output shaft housing on the all-wheel drive models.

Use a Scan Tool in order to read the vehicle control module (VCM) diagnostic trouble codes.
Are there any vehicle speed sensor related trouble codes?

My 2003 Silverado at times will show rpm but not mph and will not shift gears.

Problem with VSS - vehicle speed sensor , maybe ! Is the check engine light on ? Doesn't need to be on to have a DTC - diagnostic trouble code set in the engine computer (PCM/ECM) VSS is located on the tail shaft off the transmission . This could also be a wiring problem for the VSS or computer problem.

Where is the wiring to the speedometer located on a 2000 alero

The wiring may not help you? The instrument cluster gets serial data from pcm for speedometer based on vehicle speed sensor input to the pcm. Does the vehicle shift ok when driving, sometimes a problem vss can effect shifting. Are there any applicable trouble codes? Some of the national brand autostores will check codes for free.

Could be the instrument cluster is faulty? Could be problem with vss? Could be problem with wiring for the vss or pcm?

Speedometer/odometer does not work, the OD ON/OFF light flashes, and am getting a vss trouble code

have you tried wiping the codes and see if they return ? if so i'd think it's a circuitry issue , was the tranny a match by year etc ?this is the problem with used parts , don't know if they had any problems before fitting , best of luck tracing fault , keep me posted if you wish

Will not shift into overdrive?

Hook up your On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) Reader and read the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's). Mine was P0500: Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) malfunction. After VSS replacement, all was fine.

Problem with speedometer for ford focus tdci reg03

This is caused by the little circuit board that runs the speedo or a Vehicle Speed Sensor problem, have any Kragen auto or Auto Zone run a trouble code test to see if a VSS trouble code is present in the memory, if nothing shows replace the speedometer or have it repaired, if there is a code for the VSS replace the sensor on the transmission.

Code p72o & p1618 &p1633 on my s80

the P720 (which i'm guessing is suppose to be a P0 or 170 means its transmission related...i dont know what the 20 stands for thats the exact specific code/problem but it gives you an idea...the two P1600 codes are Manufactur made and they are both about PCM-Auxiliary Devices..

So i'm guessing that the one that is making your car not move is the P700 code..

hope that gets you started

Check engine light reports VSS problem

A specific trouble code,no matter what the code is,always has a diagnostic route that is available at pay sources like All Data online. It always involves checking the wires involved in the specific circuit, for continuity, along with testing the individual components, like the vehicle speed sensor.Remove the VSS from the trans, and reinspect the drive, and driven gear. The drive gear is attached to the differential down in the trans, and you have to actually look down in the hole, and verify the drive gear is ok and intact. Then look very carefully at the plastic gear that is attached to the VSS,and make sure the middle of it isnt "applecored" as this will cause the VSS to NOT turn or give a signal. Now,reinstall the VSS,and turn the differential. This requires two helpers, one on each side of the car,to turn both tires at the same time,in the same direction (this turns the differential) while you are checking the two wires coming out of the VSS,for an alterenating current flow, that would be sent to the PCM(ECU).Verify VSS operation. If the VSS is producing a signal for the PCM,then the only thing left is the PCM itself,or the wires between the VSS,and PCM(ECU).That goes back to what i was saying about checking the wires' continuity between the sensor and PCM.Make certain the wires involved in the VSS circuit have continuity, and good tight connections at both ends.Good luck.
