2006 pontiac torrent whining sound coming from rear when driving

It does not do this all the time. when it does it. it is at 30 mile an hour and it seems to be getting louder. Hasn't done it for three months but now started again. I took it in and was told didn't know what it was. not to worry about it if it didn't happen all the time.

The only thing I would think of is. At the GM dealer ask for a service bulletin for the 2006 Pontiac Torrent if any or look for any changes in body configuration and under the car. Whining noise could be a big puzzle. Need a very good technician in noise problem to find out and very expensive to find if not under warranty.

Hope it helps.

SOURCE: 2006 Pontiac Torrent rear drums

They pull off just like any other vehicle, unless you live in an area where they use salt. Brake and suspension parts on these rust and sieze quickly. Soak with penetrating oil and keep tapping around perimiter. I do this for a living, and I've had Torrent drums take me hours to break loose (I'm surprised the wheels even came off)

SOURCE: 2006 pontiac torrent shut down car will just crank, not start

The factory alarm is not to be tampered with as you can reset it but not disconnect it as it's part of the main fuel injection system. Do you have the right key? Just because it turns and cranks doesn't mean it has the right code. the security light off with the key on ut not cranking? If it stays on you do have a security problem. The system can be reset ( if the battery is good, and hot. Trun the key to crank and letgo the security light will but on or blinking . Leave the key on till the light goes out (around 15 minutes. Once it's out turn the key off then back on and the security light will be back on again. again wait till it goes out turn off then on again till the light goes out. Now turn the key off wait a few seconds trun it on and crank the engine. If it starts then it's reset. Sometimes I've had to do this more than three times to get it to reconize the key as the right one. rember a store cut key won't ever work as it doesnt have the (brain in it the the factory key does. Lets say your wrong, about the security system. The fuel pumps go bad like crazy and its thier season to fail. They fail quicker if you $5 the car alot. (runing on empty) Was the check engine light on as it ran the last time it was running? If so the codes need to be retieved and repaired. A scanner will find the security enabled on too.

SOURCE: Pontiac Grand Prix GT grinding and whining noise when turning...

If you have a warranty from your dealer, you paid for it, or whether it came with it, it doesn't matter, you MAKE them honor it. Take it back there, and MAKE THEM FIX IT! This shouldn't be your problem if you have a warranty. If they aren't honoring it, threaten them with the BBB or court. They will shape up.
I would say power steering pump.First check to make sure there is fluid in the reserve tank and at the proper level if not top it off and whine should stop.If level is correct then maybe try flushing with fresh fluid.
3.8L engine the power steering fluid was never toped/checked.. because it is a pain in the *** to get at (behind the hot as hell alternator), so it probably ran dry, top it up is probably all you have to do.. if the whining presists then you will have to try and bleed the air out by jacking it up, engine off, turn the wheel one side to the other about 25 times.. if that dont quiet it up then you will have to replace the power steering pump.

Power steering pump / fluid level is not hard to check - it is located below the alternator on the passenger side of the engine bay. You need a light to see it. You can get your hand down from the top of the engine to loosen and remove the cap/dipstick.
Here is a link that should help you.http://www.paulstravelpictures.com/GM-Pontiac-Grand-Prix-GTP-Power-Steering-Whine/index.html
Good luck and thank you for using Fixya

SOURCE: 2006 Pontiac Torrent, won't start, changed

I would check the cables for corrosion build up,clean the cable ends clean, and shiny, make sure the alternator is charging correctly, checked at the battery, with headlights on,and ac on high blower motor, the voltage should read 13.65 to 14.25 volts,no more,no less, then check the see if there is a draw, pulling the battery down, with the key off,if this was helpful, please rate, thank you.

I have a 2006 Pontiac Torrent showing codes P0171, P0420 and P0420P. Any help?

171 and 420 both have the same area that will cause these codes to pop..

you need either your O2 sensors replaced or new catalytic converter replace, if you have over 140,000 miles I would replace both ..

2006 Pontiac Torrent will not gain pressure in brakes. Changed front pads, bled system and replaced master cylinder. What could be the problem?

I'm having the same problem but I changed the caliper also and after 1 hour of bleeding the lights starting with the rear right tire and no more air is coming out I still have a very soft brake paddle.

I just purchased a 06 pontiac torrent. no service record. What kind of oil do i use in this suv? It has 100300 miles on it.

Try a 10w 40 weight.
If you live is a hotter climate use a 20 w 50.
The old addage about "once you use synthetic oil you have to for the life of the car" isn't true.
You just can't mix the two types of oil.
Good luck,Gary

I smell antifreeze when the heat is on. The inside of the windshield is fogging up and will not clear and I am starting to get smoke coming through the vent. I have a 2006 Pontiac Torrent

usually this means a faulty heater core. mechanic labor guide calls for 5.2 hours plus an ac recharge. the dealer list price for the part is $190.10 plus anti-freeze.

I appreciate the feedback and am somewhat better informed when I take the Torrent into the shop tomorrow...obviously a bandaid over the pig shaped engine light wasn't cutting it! The light came on within 10 miles.
