Outside temp guage is faulty

Heater blows cold air and the temperature guage reads cold after driving for 20 minutes

Best case scenario is your thermostat is stuck open. When this happens the engine will take a long time to warm up and will never get up to full temp. Worst case could be a serious problem such as a blown head gasket. If there is no coolent in the engine the temp gauge will not register either.

Is the engine actually over heating or just the gauge giving incorrect readings?? The stepper motor in the console's temp gauge could be defective. Have someone with a laser heat gun check the temp of the engine around the thermostat to find the correct temp.

Sure the engine coolant will be warmer than the outside temperture and if the car has been sitting a long time in cold weather and the outside temperture warms up it could be the other way around. The coolant temperture sensers aren't real accurate as they are a relaitive senser beween hot and cold and the numbers reported don't have to be real just the change from hot to cold and the reching of the coolant to the operating temperture. Noe it the senser doesn't read the opertating temperture coprrectly you'll have all kinds of problems. The therostaste will try to set the temperture of the water to it's set temperture and can open or close completly to get 195 degrees F. Many times if it's too cold then the stat is bad and needs to be replaced This shows up in alot of cars first thing after winter and the first onset of cold weather when the daily tempertures vary the most from day to night.

Temperture guage goes from 180 to 260 and bounces back and forth. The service engine soon stays on constant. The check guage light goes on and off when the temperture goes red line.

The check engine light is operating correctly as the computer reads a spike in temperature range in the engine. Your problem is more than likely a bad thermostat. I have seen times when a bad or loose radiator cap would cause the same symptoms. If the radiator cap has been removed recently it could be that it is just not on correctly. Make sure you check this only when your engine is cold. Hope this helps you out

Temperature guage inside car

sounds as thought the location of the temp sensor is not very good. If you had a way to trace the sensor, you could find out. If its too cold, someone has placed it in the wind, or in front of the car. If its reading too hot, its sitting too clos the the radiator/engine/or exhaust. If you have had any body work done to the car, or major work in general, someone probably moved it. Or maybe the person before you had work done to it. (if its used). And I guess the sensor could be broken, but in that case, they usually read one temp, or read error.
