My 1998 Chevy Cavalier 2.4 liter will not turn over. Everytime I turn the ignition key, my car wont even try to turn over. You can hear it clicking to the battery, but it's not the battery. My stero stays on and everything electric works and I've put a new battery in. And I replaced my alternator and it still wont crank.
battery appears ok as lights, radio, dashL's all work. When turning key to engage more (no clicking noise) you can hear a 'strained whinning' noise.
Attempted the pop the starter trick but no go...btw, double checked all battery/ign/starter fuses and confirmed good.
suggestions elsewhere to look for problem? Thanks!

Sounds like you have a bad starter. To check this you can try taking a hammer to the starter and tap it while someone in the car turns the key. If it starts you know you have a bad starter and need to replace it. Hope this helps you out

Try this,it wont cost anything but time.Remove the ignition switch(not the key lock) But leave it plugged in. Place the key lock in the run position. Using a screw driver turn the ignition switch and start the car. Does it still ding? It Should... If yes, push in the little white stem on the key lock with your finger.(on the tip BETWEEN where it was connected to the wired ignition switch) Does it stop? If yes, either the little stem has worn down or a dent has worn into the plastic electrical ignition switch. You will have to decide which is not right. But that is the part that sets off the "Key Left In Car" ding.
You have a short to ground inside the steering column Measure voltage with ignition off.any wire that has less than 12 volts should be considered as problem if not black in color
try locking your car with the key and unlocking it with the key, leave it for 30 second or so between the locking and unlocking , the car thinks some one has tampered with it
The original Chevy pump motor has a good life. Running the vehicle out of fuel, which will actually run the pump in a dry state can shorten the expected life span considerably. Gasoline is a petroleum product and actually lubricates the inside of the fuel pump. The more you run the vehicle low on fuel or out of fuel, the more damage will occur and the quicker the pump will fail. Try replacing the pump and follow the above procedures for a good performance of the pumps. ok well here's the thing. This key has not been used before. The keys are cut to the specs of the ignition so they may be undercut so to speak. I know on my car i can turn it upside down it will work. But on the other hand it could just possibly be a back up for when you lock your keys in your car (not likely but it's still possible). You can keep putting your key in and out a bunch of times and **** the steering wheel back and forth as you turn the key to get it used to the ignition switch. See if that works and if not i will see what i can come up with in the meantime for this exact car.
