The car overheated on my way to work, spewing white smoke really bad! The car does start and runs fine no loud noises, just the leak
Hi Stephani again, here's a water pump replacement guide. Here are the water pumps.
Hello,
Well--there is a lot that could have happened by overheating. But why did it overheat? Usually, when the water pump bearing goes there will be a rather loud noise and the water pump will leak because the water pump is designed to leak when the bearing goes (the wobbling water wheel knocks off a plug and makes a small hole). But if the bearing does not make noise you still have the small hole (backup).
On the front of the intake there is an upper radiator hose inlet, this inlet is held by two bolts and a gasket. Under the upper radiator hose inlet housing is a thermostat. Usually (not always), when the thermostat fails the thermostat will fail in the open position to allow continual water flow.
Did the overheating cause the leak? Sounds like it did--
Possible problems - blown head gasket
Cast heads - replace the gasket, should be fine.
Aluminum heads and cast block - Magnaflux head for cracks, check for warped head, machine as necessary.
Aluminum head and block ask for the service department at the chevy dealership and talk to a mechanic (you should do this any way--free advice).
Further, try to find the leak so that you can see exactly where it is leaking (on the front or side of the intake).
I hope this helps!!!

on the 3.8 ussaualy not the head gasket but the upper intake gasket . antifreeze leaks inside intake and into the cylinder. very common. the new gaskets are much thicker.or the plastic plenum the black plastic part on top of the engine goes bad around the water inlet and need to be replaced . when i do either job itell the person to replace both at same time saves money and headaches in the near future. hopes this helps .....and cost for a shop to do this $1100 to $1500

sounds like you might of blown a head or intake manifold gasket or cracked head. If it sounds like a rollercoaster going up the tracks or tractor sound. it's that. It's expensive repair. My advice if you dont know anyone cheap get another used car until you fix it or whatever your situation is. Also, it idles up and down because of the air escaping from the crack. If engine doesnt hold constant pressurethats whate happens. everything is to the T when working with vehicles. Plus redline dont matter, theres a cut off point, however because of the high rev you could of caused the over rev and blew a gasket or cracked the heads. Especially if you didnt have the proper fluids to keep the temperature down. Good Luck. Been there.
