2003 Chevy Impala LS. (Great car !)
The map lights in the rear view mirror work once in a while, the "dome" lights in the back work fine always. This car has the "retained accessory" feature (where the map lights, radio, windows, etc work for 10 minutes after turning ignition off)
If I knew where the relay for the map lights is, I would re wire the map lights. I have been to 5 libraries and not found any information on this car.
Can you tell me where the relay is, what color the wire is, or send me a wiring diagram.

I had the exact same problem and I had determined that it was in the wires leading to the rear defrost. The main problem area is in a connector located under the footrest for the drivers left foot under the carpet. The wire leading to the rear defrost runs through the drivers side under the plastic moulding in the car frame, the wire is black and the thickest one in the bundle. A large green/blue connector usually melts the plastic around the connection causing it to fail. I fixed this by just getting a new connector similar to my old one from a junkyard and just rewired it, connecting the same wires the connector as before. It is in an awful location but it is possible to do. Be sure solid connections are made and soldered correctly to prevent this from happening again.

TEmprature is not an indication for replacement. Relays are an electromagnet and do get quite hot, malfunction is the time that you replace.

Assuming you have the automatic dimming rearview mirror with the map lights, I have the same problem. It started after having the front windshield replaced and I realized afterward that the mirror was hanging by the wire harness during the transplant. The mirror may be removed from the glass mount with a T-20 Torx bit. There is a connector to the circuit board located inside the mirror. The connector has a latch and may be disconnected from the board so you can see it. The trouble is probably in the soldered connection to the board because if I wiggle the harness I can get it to work temporarily. I don't see any way to take the mirror apart to get at the board without destroying it. So the mirror may have to be replaced.
