2000 mercury cougar engine speed stays up when gas pedal is released, sometimes increases when pedal is releases to shif up gears, takes 3 seconds or more to come down to idle when gas pedal is released, will hold at 2000 +- 250 rpm when driving and releasing gas pedal and just letting it go onj by itself, but will drop in rpm if brake is used and gas pedal is released to slow down, and sometimes at a stop light will almost stall dropping to 250 rpm then recovering to a good idle speed of 750 rpm. The idle control motor was changed less than 10,000 miles ago (New Ford part used).

Check your PCV valve tube (to the right side of the top of the engine. When mine did this, the tubing for the PCV valve had dry rotted and cracked, thus losing pressure and stalled the car. Ford parts department has these at any dealership if that is the problem.

SOURCE: engine stalls after cold start-up & release from high speed idle

I had a similar problem.  I found the filter cartridge below the pcv valve had carboned up, and after the crank case pressurized, oil was forced out the pcv supply line to the throttle body.  The idle air control valve solenoid got oil in it and caused my problem, but only when it was cold.  The pcv cartridge is accessed by removing the pcv valve and the rubber fitting that the pcv valve mounts in.  It can then be fished out with a pick set, and it is a pain because you can't see it, but you can get you hand back there.  I hope this helps you.

SOURCE: stalls when idling

This generally is your throttle position sensor or Idle speed control motor. The idle is controlled by the Power Conotrol Module/computer & shouldn't really require adjustment at the throttle body if the components are installed & working properly.

The symptom you are describing is a textbook example of a failure in one of the parts listed above.

As always, I suggest you do check your air filter & fuel filter if not changed recently, use an OBD II tester to provide you with any engine codes that haven't yet triggered the "check engine" light. Some single codes don't trigger the light & some do, just a good check you can usually have done at a local auto parts store. Free as a rule from some of them. They want to sell you the parts! Good luck.

What does front brakes wont release mean

It means the brakes are still applied...the hydraulic pressure from stepping on the brake pedal is not releasing once you take your foot off of the brake pedal. Causing the brakes to not release.

You have a mechanical bind. Disconnect the main linkage and work it all by hand. Everything should be free and slopy. Aerosol carb cleaner will help, but only when the engine is not running.

Increased speed without pushing on gas pedal

Either engine is set to higher RPM than specified or your throttle cable is jammed and needs to be checked for release or obstruction in release.

My car keeps driving after i take my foot of the gas

Your throttle cable may be binding or sticking - with someone's help, check it for proper closing action at the throttle body (or carburetor if you have one) on the engine.

My truck starts and stalls and will not idle

Try increasing the idle speed. If you don't know, this is how to do it.
Open the bonnet and ask someone to push and release the gas pedal a five second intervals.
Observe which part is moving.
Yo will see a small adjustment screw on that lever. You will understand that by adjusting the screw you can increase the gas supply to the engine.
Slowly rotate the screw while the engine is running. (If the engine doesn't run in idle state as you have explained, ask someone to keep the pedal slightly pressed. After increasing the gas supply, ask the person to release the pedal).
Adjust it further to get a smooth running condition at idling.
Also check whether air cleaner is blocked.

Ford escort 1989 increases its speed without stepping on the gas

First guess is that a motor mount is broken and lifts one side of the motor just enough to pull on the throttle cable.
Second guess is that the cable return spring is broken or missing. It pulls the injector throttle body lever closed when the gas peddle is released.
