Is it hard to replace a transmission shift solenoid?

My van takes forever to shift from a low gear starting out. it takes 20 mins or so to even get it actually kick up to the next gear. the rpms are so high before it shifts so we have to putt around under 30 mph till it warms up enough to shift.

Hi I am Vortash sounds like Torque slip check your fluid levels in the transmission. Rpm will rise if there is weak drive then as the vehicle reaches change speed it will snatch because the rpm is high .. if your levels are ok you may need to get your Torque converter checked out .. hope this helps regards Vortash

SOURCE: I have a 2002 pontiac grand am gt that is'nt shifting gears right

My daughter has a 2003 with the same problem. She took it to a highly regarded transmission shop. They told her it is not the transmisison but an engine performance problem. She took it for an oil change to check the filters etc and the fuel filter is bad. I will follow up if that fixes the problem.

SOURCE: the transmission gears are slipping.

the cheaper way is to call a junkyard and get another used transmission, with much lower miles. problem is that it is so old few yards will have an interchange on it. yes after 25 years a transmission can and will fail, it has been doing well for at least 15 years and deserves some praise. must have already been rebuilt at least once.

SOURCE: 99 Grand Am. No reverse

Hello and welcome to FixYa!
Looks like a faulty torque converter to me. If the torque converter is faulty, it shifts hard or may stay on a certain gear. Reverse can be affected too. I strongly suggest that you have a torque converter replacement if that's the case.
Before going to torque converter replacement, please do check the transmission fluid. If it looks or has a burnt smell then it can be the issue too. Burnt fluid may cause irregularities on transmissions operation. If that's the case then go for the fluid replacement first and if it still fails then it's time to have a new torque converter.
Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

I have a G30 chevy van, out of the blue it decided not to shift out of 1st gear, trans fluid is clean and full, what could be the problem ?

There could be a number of possible reasons why your G30 Chevy van is not shifting out of 1st gear. Some potential causes could include:
  1. Faulty shift solenoids: The shift solenoids are responsible for controlling the flow of transmission fluid through the valve body, which in turn affects the shifting of gears. If the solenoids are not functioning properly, it can cause the transmission to get stuck in 1st gear.
  2. Low transmission fluid pressure: If the fluid pressure in the transmission is too low, it can prevent the gears from shifting properly.
  3. Faulty transmission control module: The transmission control module (TCM) is responsible for controlling the shifting of gears in an automatic transmission. If the TCM is faulty or has malfunctioned, it can cause the transmission to get stuck in 1st gear.
  4. Internal transmission issues: There could be internal issues within the transmission itself that are preventing it from shifting out of 1st gear. This could include worn gears or clutches, or other mechanical issues.
It is recommended to take your van to a qualified mechanic or transmission specialist to diagnose the issue and perform any necessary repairs.

BMW E46 ZF 5HP19 trouble code P1732 P0733 P0734. My car only has 110K miles, transmission fluid has just replaced. It was dark, dirty, not burned, has some sludge but no metal shavings. After driving for...

Yes, this could be the shift solenoid. Was the transmission filter changed at the same time as the fluid? Dirt in the system can affect some of the transmission sensors tripping Trouble codes. I cannot be sure what the P1732 code is as some codes can be very vehicle specific but it appears to refer to the transmission or on of it's sensors.

P0733 - Gear 3 Incorrect Ratio.
P0734 - Gear 4 Incorrect Ratio.

After first starting and going down the road it takes the transmission about a mile to shift is that normal

Get filter changed is always your first fix with shifting problems in a automatic transmission . They wont tell ya that but it usually is the problem or a shifting solenoid that can be replaced at same time..

95 dodge caravan transmission will shift when cold but once van gets warm after about 30 mins of driving, wont gear down, just stays in low gear... do i need a new transmission?

It could be a solenoid in the transmission, or the pump, or something in the valve body. You will probably need a shop have a look at it.
I would get a couple of estimates from different shops.

2000 blazer shifts fine 1-3 gears , wont go into overdrive, shows check engine light trouble code po0753 shift solenoid a , any help

OK, let me remember..........the code 753 means the solenoid INSIDE the tranny pan is bad. You don't have 1st or 4th gear, is what I was told, however, you probably WON'T even notice. I didn't. If you are at a stop, and get on it hard, you should be able to tell. If you drive normal, like me, and just accelerate gradually, you would not be able to tell that the truck is not hitting the 1st and 4th gear. You may not recognize a problem, just the check engine light. Your going to have to drop the tranny pan, replace the solenoid, and reinstall the fluid and the pan. The hardest part is, upon dropping the pan, if you don't know what you are doing, you can damage the other solenoids, and if you don't damage any, you may still have a hard time realizing which solenoid is the right one. It would take 1hour at, plus tranny pan gasket and fluid, etc., etc., for a total of about $120. Most transmission shop charge $100 for a transmission oil and filter service. The solenoid was about $20. It is not hard to replace, just unclip the wire harness and solenoid which will be an extra 5 min to the service time.

My name is Kenny from Dalas, Texas I have a 95 1 ton chevy van with a 4L80E Transmission. It started shifting hard a couple of days ago. Ichanged the Filter and The Fluid. Now it takes along time to shift...

Shifting hard goes to line pressure. Check the filter you put in. There's a short version and a long version. If you have the long version in there, it will bottom out in the pan. Do not change the solenoids because it already shifts differently after changing the filter.

Transmission bad

Hi. the first thing here is to check the transmission fluid level. If its not low, i would schedule a transmission flush with the filter change. If the trans mission is still having a hard time shifting after the flush and filter change, you may have a bad shift solenoid that may need to be replaced. This will require you or the tech to drop the transmission pan. the solenoids are located there inside the pan and, if they are malfunctioning, the transmission with shift abnormally. while the pan is dropped, you or your mechanic should inspect the bottom of the pan for small metal fragment. if there is any type of metal gear fragments that are laying on the pan once it is visible, this will confirm major gear separation. You will have to rebuild this transmission at this time.

Please rate and god bless.
