White smoke blowing out the exhaust pipe

I have a 1997 Buick Lesabre that starting stuttering, loss of power, strong strong fuel smell which started quickly and now blowing white smoke out of tailpipe. Coils are not the problem, no water in oil, no discoloration in the oil, we did however find a small leak in the quick connect for the fuel line, but that has been repaired. Please HELP

Sounds like a head gasket leak. Have a cooling system pressure test and cylinder leakdown test performed. In the meantime, you should NOT drive this vehicle or you'll cause more damage.

SOURCE: white smoke from buick tailpipes, wont start

I had the same problem with my '87 Buick LeSabre 2 years ago. But it didn't seem to fit right, the car was running fine up until it just didn't. I had 3 professional mechanics swear it was a blown head gasket. I researched thoroughly and found out this particular engine make has a DEFECTIVE upper intake manifold which can break down and cause coolant to leak into oil, simulating a blown head gasket. The NHTSA had issued a recal on SEVERAL GM cars with this engine, EXCEPT for the '97. I filed a complaint with the ODI and as of today it is now COVERED as a "Defect & Recall". NHTSA ID number 96V116000. This MAY be your problem if it is NOT the "usual" blown head gasket. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: I have a buick lesabre

  • Hi, I can help.

  • When you rebuilt the heads I assume you replaced the head gaskets as well?

  • What I am wondering is did you do an immediate oil flush of the entire system? If you did not there will still be plenty of antifreeze with in the oil system. The oil pump, oil cooler lines in the crank case etc you have to get it out of there.
  1. I recommend an immediate oil flush on your engine.
  2. After the oil flush then immediately drain all the oil real well.
  3. Install a new oil filter.
  4. Ad five quarts oil.

  • The not starting right away can be due to fouled plugs from your recent problems.
  1. Even if you have recently changed the plugs you need to check them again and more than likely change them again. If you have not changed them since you did your heads them change them right away.

  • Keep in mind that just because the heads were rebuilt and the gaskets replaced does not mean that somehow the gasket was placed right. I have seen people not place the gasket right or the gasket had a tear or rip that went undetected and the gasket never sealed right.

  • Also keep in mind that some cars will have some white smoke exit the tailpipe after it has sat for a while or on a cool morning. If the smoke clears up within a couple minutes then this is normal.

  • Check the PCV valve on the top of the valve cover gasket and the PCV valve hose real well. Make sure there are no crack and the PCV pipe sits well. The PCV valve hoses tend to rot after a couple of years so make sure that has not happened. Make sure they are both real clear.

  • Often antifreeze coming out the tail pipe will have a hot sweet smell to it. It is very distinctive.

  • If you have any comments please feel free to leave them here and I will respond.
  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

Regards, Tony

What does it mean when check engine light is flashing and white smoke coming out of exhaust pipe along with raw fuel? 2003 Chevy Tracker

Ordinarily, rough running with a raw gas smell indicates a fuel pressure regulator or fuel injector problem, but that usually produces grey or black smoke. The white smoke may be steam, which is more serious.

If the exhaust also smells somewhat like maple syrup (that's what burned engine coolant smells like unless you are running water without antifreeze), or your coolant level is going down rapidly, you probably have a bad head gasket, cracked block or head that is leaking coolant into one or more cylinders. That's what would produce a large amount of steam, and the uneven power production is what makes the engine vibrate strongly. The mixture control system is being all messed up because the coolant in the cylinder is preventing proper combustion - on the one hand the knock vibration sensor is telling the computer that the engine is running too lean, but on the other hand the oxygen sensor is detecting the rich condition. A readout of the engine computer would be interesting to see.

Run the engine as little as possible until you get this checked out. A coolant leak into a cylinder can cause quite a bit of secondary damage.

You may be able to identify which cylinder has the problem by removing the spark plugs and inspecting them. A wet spark plug is confirmation of my hypothesis. If you have a borescope (video camera on a flexible tube or with a fiber optic bundle with a lens on the end), you can peek inside the cylinder through the spark plug hole. Otherwise, pull the head to see where the coolant leak is.

You have damaged the engine, the smoke is from burning coolant in the engine due to a blown leaking cylinder head gasket or gaskets. Do not drive this or you will completely destroy the engine.

Spitting sputtering

These things are notorious for having crank sensor failures. Not too expensive and not too dificult to replace. I would try that first.

2001 Dakota compression loss, smells like gas, white smoke from exhaust

Sorry but this has happened to me before, you might have a blown head gasket. that is where oil and or water are getting in to the piston cylinder and causing the white smoke cause the oil and water is being burnt or boiled.take it to a shop unless you have all the right tools and knowledge to do this job. i cost me like $1500 labor and parts.

Sir, I have a 1997 Buick Lesabre,3.8 engine...with about 168,000 on it..."it ran good for about 15 miles"...never showed it was hot on the temp gauge at all...then pulled up at the intersection...

is the radiator full or a least enough coolant that you can see it? water out of the exhaust is common on a car with catalytic convertors(this means your convertors are working).now if it is white pillows of smoke with a sweet smell then it is burning coolant in the cylinders. sounds like the ignition module is your problem with the missing and the no fire condition. a blown headgasket will not cause the engine not to have ignition fire.

On top of the engine find the fuel rail, unplug the vacuum line that is on the pressure regulator and see if it is leaking fuel. if it is that is your problem, it is sending raw fuel into your intake.

Car died rotton egg smell

Not sure if engine coolant smells like rotten egs when it burns inside the cylinders , but it sounds like you may have blown a head gasket. Coolant and/or oil could be getting inside combustion chamber. Another possibility is that the catyletic converter might have broken up and colapsed onto the screen where it goes into the exhaust. Might give the rotten egg smell and block the exhaust enough to cause backpressure sufficient to cause the engine to run poorly too.
Try putting your palm over the exhaust pipe , if the exhaust is coming out in pulses (pop ,pop, pop) thats normal , if it is just slowly flowing out with no noticable pulses , I would check into the cat converter problem.
