Cannot get 5th and reverse gear. Feels like neutral. 1, 2, 3 and 4 work fine.

After trying to shift into 5th or reverse, the gear wont engage. The shifter becomes loose and flimsy and its hard to get back out again. There also seems to be more play in the shifter in gears 1-4 now.

Right under center console where shift lever connects to linkage rods there are bushings that join the two. In a neon there are also two rods. They move up left or down left or up right or down right in unison depending on which gear u need. A bad bush in on right side linkage will result in loss of 5th and reverse. In the up right and up left position. To access linkage push gear stuck down (towards ground) and rotate to left then pull off. Then remove center console to get look at linkage good luck btw new linkage bush in really cheap

The weld on the manual lever is known to break loose. First, with the wheels off the ground, with the lever in the park position, does the drive shaft lock in park? If yes or no sometimes, drop the trans pan. I bet the nut on the lever camd loose.
