2002 mitsu belt squeal.

I have a 02 lancer and ever since i had my belts changed (alt and timing). I have had a very loud squeal when i start my car sometimes. Generally it has to be a little damp out like dew on the grass. Any ideas i added new PS fluid and used the belt spray. The belt spray works for only the first startup. Any help would be great. Thanks

  • Anonymous Dec 21, 2008

how can you install a smooth belt instead of ribbed it doesn't happen.

the term the belt is wearing in is a B.S term mechanics use because they cant be stuffed getting under the car and adjusting it.
belt don't were in if the belt has worn in its time to replace it.

seen it all before mate 12 years as a mechanic and 5 of those at mits

you got your self a lazey mechanic

  • ash seder Dec 21, 2008

yeah mate it is very easy is the car a ce lancer our a cg lancer they changed over around that time
also what engine is it running 1.5-1.8.ect.. and what belt did you have replaced there are more then one belt.

your best bet is when the engine is off grab a belt and pull it up and down to see how much movement there is if it is moving up and down more then 1 cm that will properly be the belt.

try no to spray belts with belt grip or crc/wd40 as it is not the best for them

do this quick check and let me no the model and ill give you a run through
i might be able to give you a diagram if you need be

  • ash seder Dec 23, 2008

i have done some research and it appears that the car only runs one belt known as a serpentine belt.
now the only way this can squeal is if they put a belt on that was to long eg. if they ran out of stock and got a generic belt that was not quite the right size our if the spring loaded belt tenshioner has got a week sring so first up what you need to do is go to your car and grab the belt ( enggine off ) and pull on it dose it feal like it moves a long way our is there a lot of spring laded tenshin then let me no and ill intruct you from there

I don't really want to say this but It seems that you may have installed a smooth belt instead of a ribbed belt on one of the components.

Squealing noise (LOUD)

You need to check the pulley alignment of all the pulleys, they should all be in a perfectly straight line, otherwise the belt will squeal

2002 Mercury Cougar Squeal

Just for testing, a few seconds, will the vehicle start and run w/o the belt? Have a helper work the throttle, is the sound gone? If problem not the belt, check the belt driven accessory. Sometimes you can use a long metal rod of some kind, with belt on, one end of the rod touches accessory housing, the other end goes on that bone behind your ear, helps to magnify the sound. I guess you could use a mechanics stethoscope to do the same thing. Have helper work the throttle while you listen to each. Don't get tool or anything caught in belt. This is a serpentine belt, I haven't looked?
Maybe an accessory trying to freeze up or bad bearing? I can't think of anything else at the moment?

My mate has a 2002 lancer .had the timing belt done and all electrics checked and a full service done..also had the plugs changed.it starts fine but when its warmed up it runs like its on 2 cylinders.

i checked the engine at gates.com, a manufacturer of timing belts. the '02 lancer is listed as an interference engine. that means if the belt broke while the engine was running, you might have some damage to the valves. also if it is slightly out of time, the problem could occur. you must make sure the timing is spot on, which may require going back into the timing belt and checking crank and cam position. you may also have to tear the valve train down and check for damage

2003 Lancer ES High pitch squeal and constant squeak

Shortly after replacing the serpentine belt in my lancer, the same thing happened. It is NOT the timing belt. Belts squeal when they slip. If your timing belt slipped it would cause your car to run funny.

have somebody check the belt for wear (or do it yourself), replace if necessary. If it doesn't need replacement, just tighten it.

If you have the 4cyl engine that I have, the tightening is kind of a pain in the ****. Not a great design by mitsubishi. There's a pulley near the front right corner of the engine in front of the alternator. the belt should be running around this pulley GROOVE SIDE OUT. This is the tension pulley.

To tighten:
1) Lightly loosen the bolt in the center of the pulley (slightly loosen, DO NOT REMOVE).
2) Under that pulley there's another bolt. You can see that the bolt goes through a piece of metal
attached to the back of the pulley. Figure out which way you need to turn the bolt to move the
pulley toward the front of the car. (i don't remember if it's right hand thread, or left hand) This
puts extra tension on the belt. You probably don't need much. Over tensioning the belt can
cause pulley bearing failure. If you haven't done this work before, ask someone for
help
. It's better to tighten a little bit, a few times rather than overtighten once.
3) Don't forget to ReTighten the bolt in the center of the pulley.

If there's lots of cracks and pieces missing on the ribs or grooves of the belt you should replace it first.

Happy repairing,
Cliff

Changed belt on 02 trailblazer now it won't start

Belt turns alternator, alternator charges battery.(no belt, no charging) Charge battery with a charger. Though it may start with a jump, the alt is designed to maintain the state of charge in the battery, not to fully charge it . Therefore jumping puts too much demand on alt and can damage it. or will shorten battery life considerably.
