Fuel pump relay or emergency engine shut off

My son has a 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse that quit running and he replaced the fuel pump and it still won't start. I took a look at it and found no power to the fuel pump. I jumped the power across the fuel pump relay and it ran fine. I even took out the jumper wire and it ran for a few days. So I replaced the relay and it ran for a day then I had no power to the coil. I ran power directly to the coil and it ran. I then jumped the power at the relay next to the fuel pump relay (The dealership said it was the emergency engine shutoff relay) it ran fine and the dealership said to replace it with a relay that had the same pattern plugin. The parts store also said to use a generic relay. I put one in and it was a A/C relay. I didn't think it would work but it did for about 10 days.

I haven't checked the amps, I don't have anything to check this with. Anyway, I had to jump the Emergency Engine Shutoff Relay in order to get the car home. I had this relay on order and picked it up today and installed it. The car started and idled for about 20 minutes and then it shut off. It started right back up with no problem. I no longer have the problem of no power to the fuel pump because I replace the fuel pump relay but now it seems that the power to the coil is being cut off. I'm going to run it till it quits again and see if the loss of power to the coil happens again and it won't start. But if it cuts out and starts back up, what could it be, is there anything else that would cause temporary loss of power to the coil?

  • Anonymous Mar 22, 2014

my son has a 2004 crossfire
    took it to dealership
    they replaced fan
    and repaired a/c system
now fan runs on high and is loud
they think they can fix it by replacing something in dash at cost of $2600
(sorry that's all the info I have for now)
    they are closed till monday
not too comfortable with the dealership
    what could it be?

Where is the fuel pump rest button on my 2000 Mitsubishi eclipse

No where only Ford had it no one else

The Eclipse (and all Mitsubishis actually) does not use a fuel pump shut off switch. That is a Ford innovation specifically that is not really used outside that brand for the most part.

The safety mechanism on the Eclipse for the fuel pump is the engine crank sensor. The fuel pump only runs when it sees RPM signal from the crank sensor.
The purpose for this is that if you are in an accident that was significant enough to cause a fuel leak, the lack of fuel would cause the engine to shut off, which would thereby shut off the fuel pump preventing fuel from pumping all over the place.

If you have no fuel pump operation, first make sure you are checking for power to the fuel pump while cranking. It does not have any constant or key-on power, it does not work that way.
If you have power but no pump operation, the pump is likely failed (though this is rare).
If you do not have power while cranking, check to see if you have spark.... if there is no spark either, double check your fuses first then if all are OK suspect the crank sensor is faulty.
If you do have spark, then you would want to carefully check your wiring, relay, etc for damage.

Realistically... 95% of "fuel pump problems" are failed or low quality aftermarket crank sensors on these cars. They get towed in all the time with brand new fuel pumps from other shops when all they needed was a crank sensor

1995 Mitsubishi eclipse starts runs 10 seconds then stalls

Is the Security light on? Could be too many things to list here. Step 1. Scan for codes. If no codes, see if it's losing spark or fuel or both. If it's losing fuel, it might be the pump or relay or wiring or computer. If no spark, it could be cam sensor or computer. Security light on means the key or anti-theft module has a problem. If equipped. Kind of what it sounds like, the computer shuts off the spark when the theft module does not detect the proper key chip.

Om how to reset emergency shut off relay 1995 3000gt 3.0 no spark on coil no spark on plugs new icm and new heads installed new timing belt crank sensor and new timing cam gear sensor

there is no Emergency Relay. Have you verified the fuses are all good. Power on one side of the coils? Why were all these parts replaced? does the check engine light come on with the key on? I dont have a diagram, but all these must be good to at least try to run.

I check all relay and don't receive direct electricity to the fuel pump and no start the car

You will never have direct electricity to fuel pump only when running then once you shut off ignition that shuts engine off fuel pump to automatically shuts off.I would change the fuel pump sit in car turn key Th start position do not crank engine if you do not hear a grrr,,,grunt sound i would say fuel pump not functioning therefore fuel pump malfunction replace.

Where is the fuel pump relay on a 95 eclipse

On a 1995 Eclipse, the fuel pump relay is located under the hood, against the firewall right next to the brake fluid and washer tank. There should be 2-4 relays, and the fuel pump is usually the relay closest to the passenger side, or on the left.

Losing power to the fuel pump

well that sounds like a relay. if your car is an automatic, double check than you replaced the ASD and fuel pump relays and not the trans control relay.
if its not the relay, its probably the ECU(PCM).
