I just traded my 1990 toyo corolla for this 1988 prelude si 4ws w/auto transmission. shifting is out of whack and the s3/s4 light is blinking, no response when pressing switch. what is up? I'd like to narrow down the direction I need to look. Advice most appreciated. roxy the car gal.

I believe this is a warning of a transmission problem (flashing S4 light), and u should have it checked by a good trans. shop or dealer. When The engine light comes on and stays on,(does it only go on when the S4 light flashes?)it is a warning of a problem (fuel injection/emissions system), which u can check by doing the following: There is a Electronic Control Unit (ECU), located under the carpet on the passenger (front) side near where your feet would be. There is an LED display on the ECU, the display is a small circle, I believe located at the top center of the ECU. When u get the ECU exposed(by pulling back the carpet), turn the key on, and observe the LED. If any codes were stored regarding a problem, the LED will flash. Count the flashes, Codes 1 thru 9 are a series of short flashes, two digit codes use a long flash for the 1st digit, and a short flash for the 2nd digit. Codes are separted by a pause between displays. If u have multiple codes , they are transmitted in a alternating pattern. Time and space make it hassle to list all codes ( there are 19 for the 91 Prelude), so if u want to go ahead and check the codes, let me know what they are , and I'll tell u what they mean. Good Luck! countrycurt0

this is not the problem of fluid, this is a major problem of transmission. The transmission must be detached from the engine, which you cant do by yourself. the transmission can be repaired but i dont know mechanics in your do it. otherwise you have to replace the transmission.

You need to check the tcm for codes too. The s3 light is like the check engine light for the tcm. The VSS code might be your problem.

I found this one the www.hondacarforum.com

You have a couple of choices on this Honda transmission... D and S modes. Consider the D as the normal Drive mode and the S for Sport mode. The difference between the two is that in "D", the transmission will shift through the gears all the way to 4th gear and at lower rpm shift points. In "S", the transmission will shift at higher rpm levels and will go no higher than 3rd gear and light S3 on the dash. Once the vehicle is in 3rd gear (S3) you can then press the S4 button and the transmission will go into 4th gear (when conditions dictate). I believe there is even an S4 indicator on the dash signifying the trans is in 4th gear
The last line looks like it is the key here though.
If the car thinks its in 4th gear when you are trying to start it, obviously it wouldn't start...you could probably hunt around and see if there is a sensor on the transmission stick that runs the "D" vs "S" mode
