I just had the same problem happening with my 2006 PT Touring. Took it to the dealership. The issue was the electric parts of the ignition switch. They replaced it and all is well in the world again.

I had this exact same problem with my 2006 with 70,000 miles on it. Kept acting up for more than a year and when it went bonkers and stalled in the middle of an intersection, it scared the daylights out of me. My neighbor is a Ford Truck Manager, and once when he heard me start the car, he said it sounded like I was having an ignition switch problem. Didn't make sense to me, but I took it in to Chrysler and their service manager told me he'd had another Pt with the same problem previously. The ignition switch was changed and I haven't had a problem with it in months. If this is such a popular complain, you'd think Chrysler would put a recall out on them because something is obviously wrong with the factory installed ones.

I had this problem for about 5 years, and had countless different diagnoses for the problem. Turned out it was the ignition switch which was a relatively inexpensive part to replace. Car works beautifully now.
Hello, I am experiencing this EXACT problem, then today it happened about 3 times in a row and the malfunction indicator light is now illuminated. Did you find a solution to the problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I couldn't respond to your question directly, but I hope you see this. I got a solution from another forum and it seems to be working. When you turn on the ignition, see if you have a little "play" with the key such that you can gently turn the key back towards you about 1/4 of an inch. I found I was able to do this, and the problem with the dashboard lights doesn't happen as long as I remember to turn the key back a bit right after starting the car. I took the car to the dealership again to see if they could fix the ignition switch so I don't have to manually do this maneuver every time I turn on the car. They said this couldn't be done. However, I also had a wiring problem in my steering column due to the improper removal of a security system. The dealership fixed the wiring and said this could also have been the problem with the dash lights, but I don't think it was related. All I know is that as long as I remember to turn the key back, the dash light problem doesn't happen. I hope this works for you! Let me know!! Good luck!

SOURCE: PT Cruiser Brake Light
The bulb in the rear light has burned out and to replace it follow these instructions: 1) go to your owner's manual to find out the part number. You can find and purchase the replacement bulb at Target, any auto parts store and even at Walmart for under $4.00; 2) pop open the trunk door; 3) get a phillips screw driver and unscrew the 2 screws holding the rear brake light fixture to your car body; 4) as soon as you turn over the fixture you'll see where to pull out the burned out bulb and replace it with the new one(s). Good luck!
SOURCE: Air bag light goes on after starting car and doesn't go off
Unfortunately if the light is on, then the airbag system is disabled and will provide you no safety in a collision. Usually when this happens on a vehicle that is so new it is usually as simple as a wire that is broken or a clock spring in the steering column.
This problem should be diagnosed by a qualified repair facility with proper electronic diagnostic equipment as it requires relatively expensive equipment that would not be worth purchasing for a single job.
SOURCE: 2006 pt cruiser, cooling fan motor stays on after
check the fluid in the radiator, and replace the thermostat the way it is positioned it could stop the flow from the radiator and keep the fan from turning off, I have found on several of them that I have worked on that the thermostat was bad. hope this helps. Only other things that would cause this or most common is the antifreeze is bad or the water pump is defective or you have a bad radiator hose but have not seen this on any I have worked on.

Stan again.. manual trans, so I clutch in and turn off the motor and restart when driving.
Stan again. It is a stop gap measure so I can get home. Thank you all for your contributions.
Stan. Gerri, you have the best answer I think!
I had this problem and nobody could get to the bottom of it. Finally fixed after 5 years. Turned out it was the ignition switch. Wasn't very costly to replace either.
