I have a 2003 Ford Windstar SE 3.8L V6 w/AC. It completely shut down its electrical system (with no battery warning) except the engine kept running. Thankfully it did lasted long enough to get me home. I put a meter to the battery to find it drained down to 11.1V. Once I charged the battery back up to par, it started fine. Wife did tell me that at low idle she had been noticing lights dimming. At that I figured the alternator was shot, and so I replaced it. During the next week of driving, my wife reported that the battery light kept goin on and off. Sometimes right upon starting the car, and others shortly after driving a mile or so. I took the car for a ride and witnessed it for myself. The lights would dim in a pulsating fashion and that would trigger the battery light to come on. After a real short time the light would turn off and everything would seem fine. Then once again the same would happen. This happened at least four times in a 4 mile run which included speed ranges up to 50 mph and with several starts and stops. My thought was that the battery was shorting out randomly. I looked at the battery, and it being 5 years in northern climate with (what I thought) was a bad alternator, I replaced the battery with the best Autozone had to offer. With the new battery installed, the car started fine so I backed it out to go around the block. Within a quarter mile the car shut down just as it did at the very beginning. So the question is what components are involved that would cause this?
Before replacing alternator testing should be done , is there B+ voltage at the heavier gage wire on the back of the alternator . Could have a blown fuse or fusible link . Your vehicle from what you have posted , isn't charging . Plus there is a regular fuse located in the under hood fuse box F1.13 - 10 amp this supply's B+ voltage to the orange with lit blue stripe wire at the three wire connector plugged into the alternator . The other two wires come from the PCM - engine computer . This charging system is computer controlled . Ford PCM controlled alternator testing

The only idea I hbave is for you to buy a OBD II sensor code reader. Know half the time the codes are generic, BUT also if you go buy a Advance auto they will read the code for you for free. And that code is the correct answer to your problem. Just make sure if your truck loses the code when you cut it off, that you don't cut it off when you get to advance auto.

Have your altenator checked. Sounds like it trying to stop charging. May be internal votage regulator.

Try replacing the fuel filter also Has it had a tune up? they need to have the plugs replaced at 100,000 if the fuel filter does not work then the most probable cause is the fuel pump is losing pressure when hot. The pump warms up and the check valve fails to close all the way allowing a now fuel or fuel starvation.

Your fear is probably right. Get it checked before any major overhaul.
