Hi, if your referring to the front differential , then it is threaded in place just simply unscrew the old and install the new one. You don't need to worry about anything else.
Suspect a worn left side spider gear or it's bearing in the differential. If a limited-slip differential, the left side clutch may be grabbing somewhat. In any case, the differential will need to be removed from the case to service any worn or defective components. Rear end service is not for inexperienced mechanics. Have you checked the fluid level in the differential? Hope this helps!
I will assume you are working on the rear differential.
After the center pin has been removed from the differential case, both rear axles must be pushed inwards to allow the retaing clips to fall out of the machined slots located at the end of each axle. These C-shaped clips ride in the inboard side of each of the spider gears. Be sure to have both wheels off to allow the axle to push far enough in.
Good luck
The only way to do the repair is to remove the brakes, axles, and then the backing plate retainers. The bolt holding the differential pin will need to be installed with lock-tite.
you will need to take off the differential cover (drain and change diff oil at this time)
rotate the axle so that you can get at the cross pin and remove it by undoing a small bolt that holds it in place. it should slide out with ease, but i have had them stick, take care not to let the cross pin get lodged where it is difficult to extract
a single C-clip is holding each axle inside the differential housing
you will need to push in from the outer end of the axle, while simultaneously manipulating the C-clip off of the inner axle, repeat this same process on the other side
